If you like or love this series it is worth the money to read

I'm a huge James Patterson fan in general, but not a graphic novel woman usually. My husband picked this up for me for Christmas and I was not terribly impressed when I first saw it. However, I love the Daniel X series and this was a new one. Once I opened it I was enthralled. It's well written, as is everything Mr. Patterson does and the graphic pictures are fantastic. I hope he does several more of these.

Good Introduction to Daniel X

James Patterson has exploded into the YA market over the last few years. The thing I noticed, though, is that all of his YA books have secondary authors. This time it is Leopoldo Gout. This pair of writers put together a pretty good story.

The back story is this: Daniel X is a humanoid alien whose race is dedicated to hunting down and killing evil aliens. Daniel's parents were killed by one when he was younger. One who was at the top of a list of the most dangerous aliens on Earth. Daniel escaped and later returned to find the list. Now he is dedicated to hunting down all the aliens on the list, setting as his ultimate goal, killing the alien who killed his parents.

Daniel has some cool powers. He can shape change. He can create real objects with the power of his mind. This includes people. It is kind of weird.

In this story Daniel is hunting down "Number Six." To do so, Daniel decides to make contact with and befriend Number Six's son. Weirdly enough, the son looks human. The father does not. The son is willing to help as he dislikes what his father is doing: setting up alien hunts here on Earth, with not a care for the collateral damage this causes.

The story is action packed, but not to the point of mindlessness. It is not simplistic. There are a good many twists and turns. One thing I really enjoy in a story is for it to surprise me. This one managed to do that several times.

It is billed as a Young Adult series. I think that is more than fair. As an adult there are still some plot holes that I fall through that would not have bothered me as a younger reader.

If you like YA, science fiction that borders at times on fantasy, and graphic novels (especially when all three are wrapped into one package) give this a try. It is a good way to introduce yourself to Daniel X.

Pedestrian writing bolstered by beautiful artwork

There isn't much to say for the story. It's enjoyable enough. It hits all the marks in this story about an alien boy who can crate reality whole cloth and needs to deal with all the aliens who are out to kill him. Apparently this is just one book in a series of books that James Patterson lent his name to (with others doing the actual writing) and it has some decent qualities. However, most of the writing is fairly pedestrian. YOu get a lot of cliches that sound like teenagers coming up with dialogue that would be "cool" instead of believable. The fact that all of Daniel's best friends have been created from his mind has a lot of potential for angst and exploration of loneliness. This potential is squandered.

However, if you don't expect much, you don't need to get too hung up on the silliness. ANd the art is beautiful so there's that.

The best value more money reloading manual

This is, without any doubt, the best reloading manual avalible. It does not restrict itself to a particular brand or product, but rather generic terms ( i.e. loads for a 156 grain .308).
The manual starts with an introduction, and goes through a useful step by step guide on how to craft your own ammo. At all times, the manual is well illustrated with clear and appropraite photos. Chapters on rifle and pistol are there, as well as a useful treatise on the perils of pressure. And, of course, Harvey is at pains to point out safety at all times, and even illustrates that point with ample photos.
All popular calibers are covered although you will not find the more obscure rounds in here. Although described as for "new Zealand and Australia" there is nothing to suggest this wont be useful anywhere else in the world. He does refer to mainly Australian components, although equivalents are listed as well.
All in all, about the best reloading manual money can buy.

More than a reloading manual

An extremely comprehensive and thorough treatise on all aspects of the art of reloading. 240 pages in total, with over 80 dedicated to explanation and information. Lists reloading data for some of the more unusual calibres, and includes a good chapter on load development technique. An intelligent, astute writer.

definitive reload reference

The information available in this book is excellent, even "factory" shooters will find invaluable knowledge in it , the section on max point blank sighting is very informative. I am now a believer! and it's ALL real data, not extrapolation from computer data! this guy's a very knowledgable man! way cool!!!!.....great book.

Still relevant and appealing, more than thirty years later.

On a recent trip to London I picked up a copy of The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat before boarding a plane at Heathrow Airport. It is a 2015 paperback just published by Picador Classic (a division of Macmillan) with an introduction by Will Self and an Afterword by Oliver Sacks. The collection of essays it contains was first published in the 1980’s, though some within it were published as early as 1970.

Although I had read some of the contents years ago, I recalled few specifics and very much enjoyed reading it again. Sacks, like many successful popularizers, has not always been highly regarded by the bulk of his fellow neurologists, possibly out of a degree of jealously or resentment. The more prominent reason, however, undoubtedly lies in the fact that he chose a clinical path outside of the mainstream of his profession.

The mainstream has been, and to a large extent continues to be, strictly materialistic and reductionist in approach. It restricts itself to palpable, objective facts and data and eschews unmeasurable abstractions such as consciousness or will. Sacks, on the other hand, concentrated on the problems of individuals who, through illness or accident had suffered brain damage. He followed them, wrote case histories, and through these painted intriguing and colorful verbal portraits. His techniques, as he himself writes, “could not be reduced to surveys or numbers; they required individual, highly personal narratives”.

The fascination and appeal of this collection lies in the uniqueness of the patients Sacks studied and described. His attitude towards them is uniformly kindly and paternalistic. He does not shy away from using words such as “soul” or “spirit” that are shunned by most in his profession. His medical vocabulary frequently includes words requiring the average lay reader to reach for the dictionary.

Also, but quite happily as far as this reader is concerned, the collection includes nomenclature that has come to be regarded as antique or politically incorrect: idiot-savant, moron, simpleton, and the like. Contemporary medicine replaces these words by colorless euphemisms or forgettable jargon. There are people out there somewhere who could be offended, or so the thinking goes. Possibly true. But the rest of us, and most certainly the English language, are the losers.

Compelling stories

"The Man Who Mistook His Wife For a Hat," is perhaps Oliver Sack's best known book. It details many fascinating stories, including the one that gives the book its title. The stories include ones of people who have lost certain abilities, such as the ability to recognize anything on the left half of their body as being theirs, so that they treat their left hand as a foreign object, and about the twins with IQ's around sixty who possess an amazing ability to recognize prime numbers and calculate consecutive primes of at least six digits in length.

One would miss the overall point of Sack's book if one simply saw them as interesting stories. More importantly, they are a testimony to the complexity and intricacy of the human brain. Why, for example, can a stroke or a brain lesion cause one person to lose the ability to understand the meaning of nouns (while leaving the ability to recognize verbs unscathed) and in another person the reverse is true? Why do certain autistic savants have the ability to calculate the day of the week on which any date in history or in the future will fall? A person reading this book will almost certainly come away with a renewed sense of the complexity of the brain.

One of the world's most admired novelists, Achebe (Things Fall Apart; Anthills of the Savannah) has maintained a separate (and much less prolific) career as a poet: this slender volume shows American readers that work. Achebe was forced out of his native Nigeria in 1966, just before the grisly and devastating Biafran War of 1967–1970. Some of his most authoritative poems respond to those, and to later, public events. "A Mother in a Refugee Camp" shows its title character combing "the rust-colored hair left" on her son's "skull," "Like putting flowers on a tiny grave." Achebe's other poems include lyrics of hope and resolve, "tearful songs/ Of joy," and responses to ceremonial occasions: "Beware, Soul Brother" advises its listener to "protect this patrimony to which/ you must return when the song/ is finished." "Dereliction" (a good candidate for anthologies) denounces those who abandon local traditions. Some of his language is now dated, or sounds awkward, at least to American ears ("evil forests of Soviet technology"), but other, stronger work shows Achebe's narrative gifts, retelling New Testament stories ("Lazarus") or animating Nigerian legends and myths ("Lament of the Sacred Python"). These and scattered other poems are "Clear-signed with a clarity/ rarely encountered in dreams."

The dean of the modern African novel in English (Things Fall Apart [1958] and several others), Achebe is also a powerful poet. In the introductory "parable" in this book, he suggests that, compared to his fiction, his poems have been nigh unpublishable. Yet their quality is high enough that they should never go out of print after this fine collected edition. There aren't many of them, and not many fill even three pages. But--contemplating, with remarkable restraint, the cultural effects of imperialism; reeling, seemingly forever, from the horrors of postcolonial wars; striving to understand the present and modernity by means of traditional wisdom, story, and ceremony--they trenchantly make their points about contemporary African life. They are often pungently humorous and ironic, as when telling the case of a modern-day Nigerian "Lazarus" or considering lovemaking "Vultures." Elsewhere they can be rueful as the blues about the human condition; see "Knowing Robs Us," in which, when it comes to joy, we humans don't measure up to mere birds. Ray Olson

Accessible and Beautiful, A Delecate Balance

I just finished reading Chinua's Collected Poems about Nigeria. I really loved it. It was entirely accessible and he provided a few end notes that were helpful but not entirely necessary because he was easy to follow. I believe that it is harder to be an accessible and beautiful poet than simply to string complex language like gaudy baubles. Chinua always remembers his reader.

I will be reading his novels in the future. I always love when someone like Chinua or Garcia-Marquez opens my eyes to other cultures and sets them in equal standing. Too often literature is filtered through "Western" lenses, and while the use of English itself is such a lens, the tone and authority of writers like Chinua to speak their truth with simple eloquence is the highest art.

My favorite poems in this slim volume were:

"Pine Tree in Spring" captures the essence of being true to oneself and one's core values. This is a theme throughout the work but here it so so pure and forthright that the poem shines brightly for me in this short and direct poem.

"A Mother in a Refugee Camp" captures the transcendence and permanence of sentiment and the value of love in a way that few poems can do. Through this work, you can watch a husk be formed as the vitality of life drains slowly, so slowly away. It's sublimely painful and fully beautiful.

"Beware, Soul Brother" is possibly my favorite poem not only in the book, but one of my favorite poems ever. It captures the need for the artist to stay close to the earth and to channel substance. At this skill Chinua is a master. I cannot express how important this, to have substance in art, but Chinua does it perfectly.

Within the bright yet unremarkable cover of this small book is the world as seen through the eyes of Mr. Chinua Achebe. The world witnessed by this talented Nigerian-born author and poet contains death, hope, strife, hunger, joy, love, wisdom, and wonder-and Achebe ushers his audience on an emotional journey through them all. As I read "Collected Poems", I became more interested in the poet himself and was driven to learn more about the man behind the words. What continues to impresses me the most about Achebe is the half-century span of his creative effort and quiet achievement in literature. As I thought more on this, I found that beside his sometimes brutally heart-wrenching imagery, what disturbs me about this man's literary work is that America is mostly unaware of its existence.

As undeniable proof that big things come in small packages, Achebe's mastery of the English vocabulary shines in this thin but powerful collection of poetry. He begins with a short preface then presents his poetry in five categorized chapters. At the back of the book are a few pages of notes, which I found to be a welcome and indispensable reference.

Steeped in the tragedies of a Biafra too soon forgotten, the chapter titled "Poems About War" is perhaps the most compelling. Achebe brings to light aspects of war sometimes overlooked. For example, in "A Mother In A Refugee Camp," a mother's love for her child converges with her hopeless acceptance of that child's imminent death from starvation. Passing on into the chapter of "Poems Not About War," the reader will discover such gems as "Public Execution In Pictures" and marvel at Achebe's ability to capture the emotion of such an event. The poem expresses gratitude that children who see of atrocities in newspaper photographs have not themselves witnessed them firsthand. At the same time, there is an unspoken regret that they may never fully understand injustice and or human suffering.

Much of this book has seen prior publication in 1973's "Christmas in Biafra and Other Poems". For those of us whose memory of the Biafran War has grown dim and for those unfortunate enough not to have read his earlier book, the reintroduction of Achebe's vision in "Collected Poems" is nothing short of a gift. So mired are we in our own day-to-day minutia that we rarely notice what has happened or what is happening elsewhere in human terms. Mr. Achebe has, with his elegant words in "Collected Poems", given both a reason and a means to see beyond our own doorstep.

A powerful collection of poems from a great writer

Chinua Achebe: Collected Poems is a book that celebrates the brilliance and virtuoso of a gifted writer. Achebe's language is elegant. His visionary committment is impressive. Much of the poems are reinforced by the poet's employment of images and elements from the African oral tradition. "A Wake for Okigbo" is superbly written. The poem is a tribute to Achebe's childhood friend and arguably Africa's greatest poet, Christopher Okigbo. Okigbo's death in the heat of the Nigerian civil war robbed the world of his full potential. This poem is fine tribute to him by a close friend and kinsman. Achebe's references to elements from Igbo

culture works wonders in this poem and gives readers something to cheer about the poet's unlimited gifts as a writer. Other poems that standout include "Christmas in Biafra" and "A Mother in a Refugee Camp." These poems are testimonies to major historical and cultural milestones and events that defined Achebe's generation and post independence Nigeria.

Overall, the collection is solid. Only a writer with Achebe's pedigree can handle the English language with such sophistication and class.

The Perfect Synthesizing Text for a Graduate Student

I should first mention that I, along with about twenty of my fellow first-year mathematics graduate students, scoured this book from beginning to end. We completed nearly every exercise, and discovered a number of errata (there is quite a large list available on the author's website, but this book shines in spite of it all).

I've experienced Fraleigh, Artin, Dummit and Foote, and Aluffi's texts on abstract algebra. While each has it's place, I have to say that Aluffi is my favorite. His writing style is phenomenal (and humorously pretentious at times). This text is not intended to be a reference, but instead read from start to finish, and Aluffi monopolizes this to its full effect. The content is spot on for the intended audience. His exercises cover important, relevant topics to important fields I and my fellow graduate students intend to pursue. These include, but are not limited to: algebraic geometry, commutative algebra, homological algebra, and Lie theory.

This book is the best I have encountered for transitioning from an elementary understanding of abstract algebra to a mature perspective, backed by the might of category theory. That being said, I can see how the book may go more smoothly if one has had some initial exposure to algebra before Aluffi. This text does an excellent job synthesizing my understanding, but the organization could be confusing for a beginner.

My only real disappointment with the book is in the final chapter on homological algebra. By the last two or three sections, the content is almost prohibitively confusing. It could be the case that there are errata that have confused me (indeed, the listed errata on his website sharply fall in this chapter, and I believe it's because most students don't get this far). But more likely this last chapter could use some reorganization and more basic exercises early on. Of course, this is the newest and most mature topic covered in the book, it was my first time encountering the material, and it is probably intended to be a test of the reader's maturity developed throughout the book. In any event, it didn't click for me as well as the rest of the book.

All in all, I'll definitely be purchasing the second edition, and I'm eagerly awaiting Chapter 1 :)

great book

This is a well organized and clearly written book. Professor Aluffi must be an excellent teacher. He guides the reader through the material and shows the beauty of the subject. His use of category theory- particularly universal properties- reveals the underlying unity of seemingly disparate notions.The chapters on Field Theory and
Homological Algebra are superb. He always provides useful comments to place topics in context. I hope Professor Aluffi will write more texts.

Calgebra

I attended a course in abstract algebra using Fraleigh's book. Then I sorta just stumbled across this one (which I should add covers a lot more than Fraleigh). With experience from Fraleigh's book (which is good) I can say this one is absolutely brilliant. It is well organized, covers a lot of ground in a (not too) leisurly pace, and the exercises are interesting. The best part about this book, however, is the way it seamlessly and naturally uses and demystifies category theory -- a subject I thought I'd not be able to understand for years -- to unify a great deal of the topic that is undergraduate/graduate algebra.

Understand Afghanistan

Buzkashi: Game and Power in Afghanistan. This book should be mandatory reading for any Politician, military personnel, or anyone else who needs to interact with Afghans and or Afghanistan. Buzkashi is a microcosm of Afghan struggle to succeed. It helps to explain the simplicity and baffling complexity of a country that consists of thousands of semi autonomous mini districts. This entire Ialamic country has traditionally had a semi feudal society that revolves around "village" scale politics. Read it and understand the tremendous problem of dealing with a society whose way of life has been shattered by Communist strong arm methods, but, a country where every man is still a potential warrior. Where almost every citizen is divided along racial, tribal, and clan lines, but the traditional loyalties have been wiped out. Leaving strongman military power and religion as the binder.
All in all a fascinating and entertaining read. Written by a brilliantly perceptive man.

Worst Book Ever!

You better live and breathe anthropology if you get this book. It is terrible! The writing is boring and lifeless. The topic goes from distasteful to simply boring. I love reading, especially non-fiction, but this book was bad and it was for a class so I had to push through it. BTW, I'm a 35 yo Masters student, not a whiny high schooler, I am being a bit whiny though :) How many different ways can you drag a decapitated and de-hoofed goat or calf carcass around the ground? This book will tell you. Which carcass takes longer to fall apart while being dragged and trampled, this book will tell you. When attending an official game did you wonder who sits where and why when the game of Buzkashi is played in a stadium... this book will tell you in painful detail. This book is going in the Bon-Fire since that class has ended and I don't want to keep it or subject anyone else to have to read it.

Don't get it unless you have to. Then question the mental state of the person who is requiring you to read this book...
