The Oxford Handbook of the Eighteenth-Century Novel (Oxford Handbooks), by J. A. J. Downie

Although the emergence of the English novel is generally regarded as an eighteenth-century phenomenon, this is the first book to be published professing to cover the 'eighteenth-century English novel' in its entirety. This Handbook surveys the development of the English novel during the 'long' eighteenth century-in other words, from the later seventeenth century right through to the first three decades of the nineteenth century when, with the publication of the novels of Jane Austen and Walter Scott, 'the novel' finally gained critical acceptance and assumed the position of cultural hegemony it enjoyed for over a century. By situating the novels of the period which are still read today against the background of the hundreds published between 1660 and 1830, this Handbook not only covers those 'masters and mistresses' of early prose fiction-such as Defoe, Richardson, Fielding, Sterne, Burney, Scott and Austen-who are still acknowledged to be seminal figures in the emergence and development of the English novel, but also the significant number of recently-rediscovered novelists who were popular in their own day. At the same time, its comprehensive coverage of cultural contexts not considered by any existing study, but which are central to the emergence of the novel, such as the book trade and the mechanics of book production, copyright and censorship, the growth of the reading public, the economics of culture both in London and in the provinces, and the re-printing of popular fiction after 1774, offers unique insight into the making of the English novel.

A Message From Elisabeth

We all have lessons to learn during this time called life; this is especially apparent when working with the dying. The dying learn a great deal at the end of life, usually when it is too late to apply. After moving to the Arizona desert in 1995, I had a stroke on Mother's Day that left me paralyzed. I spent the next few years at death's door. Sometimes I thought death would come within a few weeks. Many times, I was disappointed that it did not come, for I was ready. But I have not died because I am still learning the lessons of life, my final lessons. These lessons are the ultimate truths about our lives; they are the secrets to life itself. I wanted to write one more book, not on death and dying but on life and living.

Is this really how I want to live my life?
Each one of us at some point asks this question. The tragedy is not that life is short but that we often see only in hindsight what really matters.
In Life Lessons, her first book on life and living, Elisabeth Kübler-Ross joins with David Kessler to guide readers through the practical and spiritual lessons we need to learn so that we can live life to its fullest in every moment. Many years of working with the dying have shown the authors that certain lessons come up over and over again. Some of these lessons can be difficult to master, but even the attempts to understand them are deeply rewarding. Here, in fourteen accessible chapters, from the Lesson of Love to the Lesson of Happiness, the authors reveal the truth about our fears, our hopes, our relationships, and, above all, the grandness of who we really are.

Amazon.com Review
After experiencing a paralyzing stroke in 1995 and facing her own mortality, Elisabeth Kübler-Ross (author of the renowned On Death and Dying) realized she had some unfinished business to take care of. "I wanted to write one more book, not on death and dying, but on life and living," she explains. So she joined forces with coauthor David Kessler, a leader in the field of hospice care, and together they wrote about the lessons we can learn about living from those who are dying. As Kessler explains in his introduction, "The dying have always been teachers of great lessons, for it's when we are pushed to the edge of life that we see most clearly."

In days gone by, the community would have gathering places where children and adults listened to elders tell their stories of life's challenges and the meaning they found in life. In lieu of that kind of extended community, the authors offer this book, filled with stories from the edge. Then, like fireside elders, they weave these personal stories into themes, such as living authentically, the importance of play, finding one's power, loving relationships, and self-compassion. One cannot say enough about the lasting value of this beautifully written and carefully rendered book. This is your chance to see life from the 20/20 vision of hindsight. In the end what will we value most? Here are some hints: the days we surrendered and became calm, the times we healed that which was broken, and of course all the moments we opened ourselves to love. --Gail Hudson

From Publishers Weekly
Blending the words of two authors is a precarious undertaking, particularly when the two voices are as strong and well-known as those of K bler-Ross and hospice-care leader Kessler (The Rights of the Dying). Given the similarity in their viewpoints as experts on death and dying, this collaboration seems logical, but unfortunately the alternating entries result in repetitive, rambling prose that lacks punch. The "lessons from the edge of life" culled from the authors' patients include letting go of anger, guilt and fear; learning patience; mourning and accepting loss; playing, laughing and enjoying life; and surrendering to what can't be changed. Although some of the brief personal stories are poignant, the underlying precepts are not new. Kessler and K bler-Ross offer only familiar aphorisms: "live every day to its fullest," "each of us has the power of the universe within us," happiness is a state of mind we can choose, suffering is an opportunity for growth, "life is a school, complete with individualized tests and challenges." Such lessons may be true and useful, but here they come off as trite. K bler-Ross has been ill for many years, suffering two strokes that left her partially incapacitated and may have made writing difficult, but the brief glimpses into her personal journey through illness and near death cry out for elaboration. Mentions of coping with a home health-care worker who stole from her, a nurse who labeled her "combative" and friends who must help this previously vigorous woman navigate the world in a wheelchair indicate a much fuller, richer story than the expanded platitudes offered here, which are unlikely to widen either author's readership. From Booklist
The psychiatrist whose On Death and Dying (1970) put issues about life's end on the contemporary cultural agenda teams with a leader in the hospice movement in her first book on living. Its 14 thoughtful chapters lead readers from the "Lesson of Authenticity" to the "Lesson of Happiness" by means of illustrative anecdotes from the lives of both authors' patients. Rather than writing in a unitary voice, Kubler-Ross and Kessler speak separately, and each writer's portions of the text are signed with her or his initials. The observations of the two sometimes complement very powerfully, especially those that come from the time in 1995 when Kubler-Ross suffered a stroke that brought her perilously close to death. She recovered to write that life lessons are opportunities to rid ourselves of negativity and find the best in ourselves and others. As the collaborators write about the lessons of fear, guilt, anger, surrender, forgiveness, and the rest, they teach that true healing extends beyond physical repair to the mending of spirits and souls. The ultimate in peace, understanding and compassion for creating and living a life that flows with acceptance
By Jim
It's really difficult for me to adequately describe how wonderful this book is. I had gone through severe emotional turmoil and searched for understanding and guidance for a year before I found "Life Lessons" As a consequence, I highlighted many paragraphs and sentences in this book and reread some of them daily. When I finish with reading the book's highlighted areas, I start over from the beginning again. This book was a lifesaver. It is absolutely non-judgmental, compassionate and inspires peace for the soul. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

One of the Greatest Books of My Life
By Jessica
When I went through the toughest break up of my life, I read this book on my ipad. I needed to find out what lessons could be learned from all my pain and take a fresh look at my life to see if I was going in the direction that would cultivate highest self. Reading about life lessons yelled me start to heal. I learned so much I bought it as a paperback and gave it to my newly ex-boyfriend so he could get the most out of our breakup as well and grow from it as I was starting to do. He was thankful and read it happily. We enjoyed a few conversations afterward about our takeaways.

Here are some of my favorite quotes:

"On these journeys we may be given a lot, or just a little bit, of the things we must grapple with, but never more than we can handle. Someone who needs to learn about love may be married many times, or never at all. One who must wrestle with the lesson of money may be given none at all, or too much to count."

"When we face the worst that can happen in any situation, we grow. When circumstances are at their worst, we can find our best."

"You undoubtedly have faults, but they are not you. You maybe have a disease, but you are not your diagnosis. You may be rich, but you are not your credit rating... All these things are changeable. There is a part of you that is indefinable and changeless, that does not get lost or change with age, disease, or circumstances. There is an authenticity you were born with, have lived with, and will die with."

This book teaches so much and I have read my highlighted versions over and over again. This is a book you either keep easily accessible or buy electronically so you have it everywhere you go.

Powerful and wise!
By Niki Collins-queen, Author
Elizabeth Kübler-Ross joins with David Kessler in their book "Life Lessons: Two Experts on Death and Dying Teach Us About the Mysteries of Life and Living" to guide us through life lessons and live fully in every moment.
"Life Lessons" is Elizabeth's eighteenth book. It's a special gift as it's the last book she wrote before her death in 2004. She had a stroke on Mother's Day in 1995 that left her paralyzed and next to death's door for many months. But she did not die. She says she's still learning the lessons of life. God is shrewd; her head was not affected by the strokes. She can't use her left leg and arm but she can talk and think. It's her final lesson. She must work on receiving, on learning to say thank you. To be nurtured rather than nurturing. Throughout her life, she gave and gave, but never learned to receive. She must learn patience and surrender.
Elizabeth says each of us has a Mother Teresa and a Hitler. The Mother Teresa is the best in us and the Hitler is the worst in us. The goal in life is to find the best, get rid of the worst and be authentic by standing in our truth. Admitting we have the capacity to be inauthentic and carry negativity is essential so we can work on the problem and release it. It's not always easy to find out who we are authentically. The reality of the world is that some relationships don't work out; there are supposed to be disagreements and disappointments.
David says the grandest kind of perfection of who we are includes being honest about our dark side and imperfections. Elizabeth says the windstorms of life, makes us who we are. We are here to heal one another. Most of us spend a lot of energy keeping a lid on our unfinished business. We want unconditional love. To be loved for who we are rather than what we do or don't do. However, when we feel unloved, it is not because we are not receiving love; it's because we are withholding love from ourselves and others. Love has to come from within. We can't solve all our loved ones problems but we can try to be there for them.
In working with the dying and the living it became clear to Elizabeth and David that most of us are challenged by the same lessons: authenticity, love, relationships, loss, power, guilt, time, fear, anger, play, patience, surrender, forgiveness and happiness. The fourteen chapters reveal the truth about theses topics, show we are put on the earth to learn the lessons, we are not alone and we are all connected. Also to watch love grow and to see how relationships enrich us.
I attended one of Elizabeth's five-day Living, Dying and Transition workshop in the early 80s. It had a profound effect on me and changed how I viewed the world. She showed us how everyone has the capacity to love others unconditionally and that it is our unfinished business that keeps us from doing so. In her workshop she created an environment where we were encouraged to express our hurt and rage in an atmosphere of love and acceptance, so we could be done with it. Feelings were not talked about but felt. If sad, we cried; if angry, we were given a rubber hose and an old telephone book and told, "Have at it!" I was skeptical about what this outpouring of negativity would accomplish. Yet it worked. I was amazed how angry, depressed people transformed themselves into radiant, loving persons right before my eyes. I realized in this workshop that we are all connected and that our life stories are much the same.

About the Author
The best-known of the French Romantic writers, Victor Hugo was a poet, novelist, dramatist, and political critic. Hugo was an avid supporter of French republicanism and advocate for social and political equality, themes that reflect most strongly in his works Les Mis?rables, Notre-Dame de Paris (The Hunchback of Notre-Dame), and Le Dernier jour d'un condamn? (The Last Day of a Condemned Man). Hugo's literary works were successful from the outset, earning him a pension from Louis XVIII and membership in the prestigious Acad?mie fran?aise, and influencing the work of literary figures such as Albert Camus, Charles Dickens, and Fyodor Dostoevsky. Elevated to the peerage by King Louis-Philippe, Hugo played an active role in French politics through the 1848 Revolution and into the Second and Third Republics. Hugo died in 1885, revered not only for his influence on French literature, but also for his role in shaping French democracy. He is buried in the Panth?on alongside Alexandre Dumas and ?mile Zola.

Good classroom edition
By K. Thompson
I like teaching this novel, but I don't have time to teach the full text. This abridgement does a good job of capturing the fullness of the story and the characters in about 40% of the pages. I like the historical timelines at the beginning and the Notes sections at the end. My students find the novel easy to manage, too.

ABRIDGED - falsely labeled
By lovetheclassics
I am very disappointed that the copy is advertised as "complete and unabridged" - right on the cover! This is definitely NOT complete or unabridged. Les Miserables is a fantastic book, but I would not recommend this publication by "Enriched Classics". Nor will I buy any from this publishing company again. I believe they should label their books honestly and correctly. If you want to read an unabridged version, do not buy this book.

Trashy, Inept, and Deceptive Treatment of a Classic
By Philip Coates
Nowhere in this edition does it say whether the book is abridged or unabridged. Nowhere does it say who the translator is. Wouldn't these be basic facts a customer is entitled to know?

Rather ironic omissions for an "enriched" edition allegedly full of supplementary helpful information.

Even worse, I strongly suspect (from another version of this 'enriched' edition on Amazon) that the translator is Charles Wilbour, a man who seems to always pop up as the translator of many French novels, but a man who should never be allowed near the French language:

As someone who knows French, I counted on just the first half page -eight- different unclear - or just plain wrong - translations. Some of them render a French word into a little known, stilted, or archaic English word.

That's when I said "Ah! This has to be Wilbour" . . . And I tossed the book with great force at the radiator.

The ESV Reader?s Bible was created so that you can read the books of Scripture precisely as they were originally written. Verse numbers, section headings, and translation footnotes are helpful navigational and interpretive tools, but they are also relatively recent conventions. In the Reader?s Bible they have been removed from the Bible text, and the result is a new kind of Bible-reading experience in a volume that presents Scripture as one extended storyline. On the top of each page a verse range is included for orientation. Other features include a single-column text setting, readable type, and a book-like format. The Reader?s Bible is a simple but elegant edition, and is perfect for devotional reading, for extended Bible reading, or for focusing on the overarching narrative of the Bible.Black letter text, with no verse numbers or footnotesSingle-column, paragraph format

Wonderful format - average craftsmanship/build quality
By Kono
This may be the very first time I have taken the time to write a review. I literally did weeks of research and narrowed it down to this bible and basically the Cambridge Clarion. I realize the price difference on the two are pretty extreme, so because of this I went with the ESV Readers Bible. For a $70+ bible I had some expectations. I did get the genuine leather addition. For starters the format is as expected - single column with close line matching to avoid ghosting on the page. I enjoy the verse numbers being at the top of each page and the red marks for chapter breaks. Size is comfortable in the hand. Leather is good quality and flexible - not goatskin flexible obviously. Overall I rate this a 4 out of 5 stars as there are a few drawbacks and craftmanship concerns. First off, the ESV logo on the binder is off center on the binding - enough for me to notice it. Yes this is not a huge deal but this is also not a $35 bible either. Also, there is only the leather sorrounding the bible. There is no page/fabric glued or sewn on either sides of the leather as you open the bible. Literally just a flap of leather surrounding the smyth sewn pages. Owning several bibles, I was surprised to see that about the leather as I feel it is not as structurally sound without the inner liner. The leather is also slightly off center and not equally centered and paralleled to the pages when you open it up - basically the leather overhanging past the pages is not equal on all sides. This is disappointing, but it's not that "off" to drive me that crazy. I also, am not one to complain and cause issues or go through the stress of trying to return the bible.

Just wanted to share my thoughts, so others could make an informed decision about purchasing this bible. It's great to read, but think they could tighten up the quality for the price.

Great Readers Edition, wonderful soft Top Grain Leather with quality binding!
By T. Howe
This review is for the Top Grain Leather edition, I own the hardback version as well and both are great for the price! I'm very impressed with the quality of the leather and binding for this price range. The leather is very soft and flexible.

It's not easy to find a quality leather Bible these days for less than $120, the binding on this Bible reminds me of the Abba leather covers used by the old Nelson Signature Series Bibles.

The line matching is spot on in both this edition and the hardback edition, this really helps keep show through to a minimum.

While the quality of this Bible won't stack up to an Allen's Bible or a Schuyler Bible, for the price I don't think you'll find a nicer binding. I was impressed they went with such a limp edge-lined binding, you usually don't see edge-lined bindings at this price point.

I purchased 5 of these and I will mention that some of the Bibles don't have as deep of a grain pattern as the one shown. Keep in mind since this is natural leather the pattern and grain will be different on each Bible.

If you're not familiar with the "Readers Edition", please keep in mind this is a "no frills" Bible; there are no verse numbers, subject headings, book introductions, cross references, translators notes, concordance etc. There are four maps in the back, but that's it. This Bible is meant to help you immerse yourself in the actual story of the Bible.

While I wouldn't want this Bible as my "only" Bible, it's fantastic for reading, which is what it was designed for! You'll find it's easy to get lost in the story and read much longer than you might usually read a "normal” Bible.

The Oxford Book of Essays (Oxford Books of Prose & Verse), by John Gross

The essay is one of the richest of literary forms. Its most obvious characteristics are freedom, informality, and the personal touch--though it can also find room for poetry, satire, fantasy, and sustained argument.

All these qualities, and many others, are on display in The Oxford Book of Essays. The most wide-ranging collection of its kind to appear for many years, it includes 140 essays by 120 writers: classics, curiosities, meditations, diversions, old favorites, recent examples that deserve to be better known. A particularly welcome feature is the amount of space allotted to American essayists, from Benjamin Franklin to John Updike and beyond.

This is an anthology that opens with wise words about the nature of truth, and closes with a consideration of the novels of Judith Krantz. Some of the other topics discussed in its pages are anger, pleasure, Gandhi, Beau Brummell, wasps, party-going, gangsters, plumbers, Beethoven, potato crisps, the importance of being the right size, and the demolition of Westminster Abbey. It contains some of the most eloquent writing in English, and some of the most entertaining.

Fine selection of great pieces.
By E. Hawkins
Gross was faced with a tough task when asked to edit this volume: how to cram the history of a form that is so flexible, and so widely used, into a compact volume? Essays have been selected from the seventeenth century on, and Gross has included writers from the USA as well as Britain. Almost his only concession has been the exclusion of any writer born after WW2. Plagued by so much choice, he has done a great job. Of course, there are omissions. Several writers from 'The New Yorker' have their say, but there was no room for its two best essayists, A. J. Liebling and Joseph Mitchell. And the abscence of Kenneth Tynan is lamentable: his essay on the folly of the Lord Chamberlin, the Censor of Pays in Britain, is far better than that of Joseph Conrad, a brilliant novelist but an undistiunguished essayist, which is included here. But everyone will find a few favourites missing in any book of this kind. In fact, Gross has sometimes tried to be too representative, to include too many discrete essays, with the result that he seems to have plumped for very short pieces. Perhaps half a dozen writers seem to have been included simply because they are or were great writers, and not because they wrote great essays. Others are represented by inferior pieces, largely for reasons of space -- space often taken up by lesser writers. E.B. White, for instance, gets just over two pages for a pretty run-of-the-mill essay, where he would be better served by 'Death of a Pig' or 'Farewell, my lovely!', both of which are far better than, say, anything by Joseph Epstein. And John Updike's 'The Bankrupt Man' hardly gives an idea of what he's capable of. But these are minor quibbles. Anyone who enjoys reading essays will find countless hours of enjoyment in this book: essays by Samuel Johnson, Walter Bagehot, G. K. Chesterton, Max Beerbohm, John Jay Chapman, and many others, are classics that repay many re-readings.

A must for any trial attorney
By Stuck in Michigan
There should be 4 books in your shelf: Damages, Rules of the Road, Polarizing the Case and Reptile. Rules is a must no matter what type of personal injury case you are taking to trial. I also recommending reading Jim Perdue's books.

more essential than David Ball on Damages !
By Trial Lawyer
Over the last 5 years I only battle against lawyers paid by the big business insurance industry. My practice is insurance breach of contract law and auto. I hold myself out as a trial lawyer because I do not accept the crap offers from the claims assessment software that every insurer uses to evaluate human life. To that end, in order to do right by your clients you must challenge the insurers of your clients or the people who harm your clients (we can not sue the insurer of the negligent driver directly) And you must be armed with proven techniques that work. That is what this book is, one of those books you tab, highlight, copy, reuse, a reference tool. This book is a must, an absolute must for anyone dealing with insurers in any capacity. It is chocked full of useful, practicable information that you can use right away. It teaches you how to teach a jury on what 'reasonable' means when they delay and deny meritorious claims. If you are a mill and settle every case without filing, accepting the low ball offers, not doing right by your client, etc., then just keep doing what you've always done and you'll get what you always gotten. But if you correct the injustices, fight for what is right, are on the side of society that helps people, not corporations, then you must by this book and use it. I have read all of David Ball's books, attended ATLA juror bias college, conventions, books on closing, jury bias, Jury Works, TLC, NITA, etc. and with all of that I found this book very useful. I refer to it before every deposition, trial, etc. I do not know the authors of the book, (I wish I did) but they are super accomplished trial lawyers. I speak from my heart on a book that will help people who care about people - and that means winning jury trials because that is the only check on our society. Remember what Thomas Jefferson said, "the right to a jury trial is more important that the right to vote." If you practice insurance bad faith law, auto law, or any law where insurance is involved, you must own this book. (...)

Rigging the Game: How Inequality Is Reproduced in Everyday Life, by Michael Schwalbe

In Rigging the Game--a brief, accessible introduction to the study of inequality in American society--Michael Schwalbe investigates how inequality is both created and reproduced. Guided by the questions How did the situation get this way? and How does it stay this way?, Schwalbe tracks inequality from its roots to its regulation. In the final chapter, "Escaping the Inequality Trap," he also shows how inequality can be overcome. Throughout, Schwalbe's engaging writing style draws students into the material, providing instructors with a solid foundation for discussing this challenging and provocative subject.

With its lively combination of incisive analysis and compelling fictional narratives, Rigging the Game is an innovative teaching tool--not only for courses on stratification, but also for social problems courses, introductory sociology courses, and any course that takes a close look at how the inequalities of race, class, and gender are perpetuated.

Review

"Having taught sociology for 25 years, I have found few books as exciting and inspiring as Michael Schwalbe's pedagogic tour de force, Rigging the Game. The astonishing chapter 7 fictional "Interview with Rania O," especially, may well be the single at once most brilliantly conceived and artfully accessible expression of sociological imagination I have ever read."--Bruce Luske, Marist College

"Schwalbe's writing is crisp and clear. Throughout the text he provides concrete examples to illustrate concepts and theories. His analysis of how social inequality is perpetuated will make social stratification understandable and help students visualize how oppression is part of everyday life."--Carolyn E. Gross, Lynchburg College

"This text anticipates many of the questions that students raise (or silently wonder about) in a first course on inequality, and it answers these questions convincingly. This is a real teaching text."--Martin Eisenberg, Queens College

"I especially love the last chapter, with Schwalbe's hopeful conclusions and community-oriented approach. This is precisely what students need to learn to co-create the alternative institutions necessary to propel us forward into the emerging global multicultural millennium. I found this to be an engaging and insightful read, so much so that I will be pleased to incorporate it into my classes."--Holly Denning, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater

"I really like this book and I bet that students will love it. It's not overly theoretical, and it relies on real-world examples. That's a unique and desirable combination of features."--Matt Huffman, University of California, Irvine

Good Place to Start
By Amazon Customer
If you're a player of World of Warcraft, but not into the old RTS games or the books that have come before, this novel is the place to jump and see some of the story behind the game you've been playing.

Christie Golden has crafted a strong character-centric tale following the life of Arthas Menethil. It shows him growing into a young man, joining the ranks of the paladins, and his eventual fall from grace in a way that is quick, concise, and yet still meaningful. Arthas is portrayed as neither a spoiled brat or an arrogant upstart, but as a well-meaning person with a good soul and a few very human and realistic character flaws that gets twisted into something horrible, party by outside forces, but also by the lack of control he has over himself. As I read it, I found myself comparing it to the fall of Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars Saga, and I hate to say it, Golden did a superior job with her take on how a hero becomes the villain.

If this book has any weakness, is that its a little too short. The first two volumes take place at a good pace, always moving but taking the time to really show us all that's transpiring. As the book moves through its third act, those familiar with Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne will note at how briefly the events of the undead campaign are covered. In contrast to the first two thirds of the book, the last third skips over large chunks of the storyline to make sure the crucial points get the time needed, which is good.

The main story in no way feels slighted. But for those of already familiar with the first draft of events, so to speak, it seems as if Golden were either pressed for time, or had a page count limit she was working under because the trek through Anub'Arak is given only the barest of mentions, and the encounter with Sapphiron is treated as if it never happened. An odd choice, given how the dragon features prominently in the World of Warcraft game at the moment.

Lastly, the book concludes with a Further Reading section. This is something new readers can really appreciate. The novel touches on events and places from other games, and expanded upon in earlier novels. This section lets the reader know where to learn more about those places and events, what novels to buy and what games to play. Some might call it shameless marketing, but it makes a handy reference section for new readers.

A good "Bad Guy" story
By Niz
First let me say, if you are a player of the game and want to expand a little on the mythos behind it, then this would be a good book for you. If you are like me and have read pretty much all the WoW books, then "Arthas" is a must read. For those of you that neither play the game, nor have read any other WoW book, you won't feel slighted. This is a good fantasy novel about a prince who follows the road paved with good intentions to hell.

Christie Golden seems to be a fan of writing the "bad guy" story. She's written both Rise of the Horde and Lord of the Clan (though the argument could be made that the leader of the orcs is not a bad guy in the true sense). With Arthas: Rise of the Lich King she gets the nod from Blizzard (the company who owns WoW) to write an account on one of the most powerful and profound characters in the WoW universe. And she does VERY well.

I agree, however, with the other reviews that state she seemed to become bored, or was strapped for time, near the end of the story. While I understand the desire to not "re-write" some things that have appeared (or may appear) in other WoW novels, sometimes the story jumped from "A" to "C" to without satisfactorily touching on "B". There are parts in the book where it was almost like "By the way, there was this big war and the good guys won"; where one sentence was the springboard past epic events in the history. Noticing it as one who has a strong understanding of the lore, I can only imagine someone who has no idea scratching their heads before reading on.

Otherwise, as I've said, enjoy the story, you won't be disapointed.

Completely faithful
By Tasha Mac
Christie Golden knocks it out of the park again. Arthas's story is one driven by the characters and their emotions more than bare-bones action, and of all the people in Blizzard's writing arsenal, Golden is the only one who could tackle such a story. And that she does, with amazing grace and tenderness toward every character, delivering each in an unbiased light. The lore is rich without being intimidating, the characters warm and developed, and it gives us Warcraft lore buffs some tasty things to chew on for a long while after. Highly recommended for anyone who likes Warcraft!
