My son's new favorite book

This is definitely my son's new favorite book. I just received this a few days ago, and I can not tell you how many times he has had me read it to him and how many times he has looked at it on his own. The book has super cute illustrations and has animals that are not always seen in zoo books such as armadillos and hyenas. Each page has so much for him to look at. In each animal's cage, there are little toys to identify. Each cage is a different color so it helps to teach colors. On each page is balloon, and he has fun finding where it is in the sky in each picture. A charming little book that would be great for any small child. It is a good size for small hands, and the pages are nice and sturdy. They are slick, so sticky fingerprints can be easily removed with wet wipes. I am pleased that I purchased this book because it gives him so much pleasure.

We love this classic!

We read this classic every night before bed! It's one of the few books we have that has hardly any words, and I love it! I think it helps my two year old kind of develop his own little imaginative story.

He loves pointing out the little mouse with the banana, and the red balloon.

I remember reading this book when I was little, and I'm so glad my son gets to do the same! Kind of nostalgic.

I have a one year old and a three year old both enjoy this book. We're doing a totschool curriculum which includes this book. The book includes many safari animals and so is perfect for a two week totschool program for little kids. The book itself is well made and cannot easily be ripped or torn as he pages are hard. It's also small so it's perfect for little hand or to take on the go in your diaper bag.

Part of the story...

This is a simplified version of "how a horse thinks" geared to the beginning rider. As experienced equestrians who have panned this book have pointed out, the author has an oversimplified analysis of horse thinking, omitting entirely some of the amazing problem-solving skill capacity of horses. As a single source for an explanation of how horses (don't??!!) reason, it fails to explain why my gelding can turn on the water, or my mare can finagle a gate loop. But it does define some of the simpler reactions horses can have to certain stimuli which would be useful to someone new to horses, for example someone who thinks horses are like big dogs. But to seriously train a horse, understand his trouble-shooting skills or how he sees "punishment" (which is in fact conditioning behavior), perhaps additional sources should be considered. Not a bad book, but not comprehensive either.

Elegant writing, charming personal stories and great guide on how horses think

I have to say, I tried several of the techniques mentioned in this book and they worked like a charm! I discovered how beneficial it is to let your horse explore his/her surroundings and felt a noticeable appreciation from my mount during a recent ride. The philosophy of understanding how a horse behaves and training with positive feedback are perhaps the main themes of this book so i would definitely recommend it to those wishing to move away from the traditional, 'slap'em hard till they behave' approach.

Great book for anyone who really wants to understand horses

Am in the process of buying a horse for my granddaughters and a public charity, I learned SOO much about what to avoid and what to do once we get it from this book!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Writer is a professional horse trainer with years of experience, and the book is also full of great diagrams, charts and photos, which also show up well on the Kindle edition, which is what I got.

A modern Conference

A priest spends an evening (and well into the night) discussing the theory and practice of the Jesus Prayer with an experienced Elder on Mt. Athos. I was reminded of the style of the 'Conferences' of John Cassian, with the eager young disciple seeking wisdom from the experienced monk and wringing out every last piece of insight. The unnamed Elder is a luminous figure; gentle, wise and full of the Spirit. His teaching is obviously derived from genuine experience. We are led systematically through the methods of praying the Jesus Prayer, its benefits and dangers, and the rich rewards that await those who persevere in bringing their heart and mind before God in humble expectation. Probably like most readers I was disappointed that the author cast a veil of silence over the Elder's description of his own vision of the Uncreated Light, but as he points out in the preface, even this silence is edifying.

By the end, we indeed feel that we have spent a night in heaven. Mt. Athos is described as a regained Eden of beauty and divine silence. The thought that such a place, with such inhabitants, still exists in the world today moves me with awe at the grace of God.

Romantic and stimulating ;) 5 stars!

This book focuses on discussions between a holy pilgrim and a true Gerondas. It begins on mount athos, the center of greek orthodoxy. It feels as if one is actually there. The descriptions are magnificently drawn. If you are interested in the Prayer of the Heart, this book is for you. It goes deep deep into discussions on prayer and other very important things such as an argument against buddhism, hinduism and the like, and why prayer of the heart is different and better. Truly a classic, the above professional review dude said it all, im just here to raise my hand and say hey this book rocks.

A night in the desert of the Holy Mountain records a conversation on the Prayer of the Heart - the Jesus Prayer between the Metropolitan of Nafpaktos, Hierotheos and an Athonite Hermit.

The book begins with a very vivid and truly magnificent description of both Holy Mount Athos, and what it means to be an Orthodox Christian Monk. "The chorus of Holy Ascetics flees from what is contrary to nature, salvages what is according to nature and becomes worthy of the gifts which are beyond nature...[Y]ou regard them as dressed in rags, as unapproachable because of their lack of regard for tidiness and the ascetic practise of not washing, yet you very soon see them as 'undying plants producing splendid fruit, lillies evergreen and always fragrant' whose fragrance always satisfies you! And all this because Christ the True Life lives in them...[I]n every Athonite monk who follows in the footsteps of the Holy Fathers and lives according to their teachings, you can discern, if you have the Spirit of God within you, the coexistence of two seemingly opposite states - death and life. Life springs from a daily death and death becomes more dead from enjoyment of Life. The more death (sin) is put to death, the more the life of Christ is experienced..."

The discussion which follows on from this is literally life changing. Whilst a lot of books tend to focus on the mechanisms of prayer, and how to attune oneself to a life of prayer, what separates this book is that we are blessed to read the words of a living saint who literally lives and embodies what it means to pray the Prayer of the Heart. The hermit explains how the Jesus Prayer consists of two basic points: Dogma - acknowledging the Divinity of Christ and entreaty - supplicating the Lord for our salvation. He explains how this confession is an acknowledgement of our inability to save ourselves, our faith in Christ and an awareness of our sinfulness. "So we acknowledge and confess the power of Christ, as well as our own weakness and acquire in this way the blessed state of humility. Where there is humility, there also is the grace of Christ." He goes on to discuss in great detail the power of God's grace in this Prayer. His explanations are such that you come to the realisation of why the Prayer of the Heart is given such prominence by the Fathers of the Church.

The Hermit addresses all aspects of the Jesus Prayer, including how the devil wages warfare against those who pray and how to counteract this, the fruits of the Prayer, errors in practising the Prayer and why this Prayer is necessary for clergy and laymen, and not just for monastics.

Words cannot begin to describe just how amazing and beneficial this book is. It has literally changed my life, and given me new impetus to persevere in prayer, so as to obtain communion with the Lord. Afterall, as the Hermit says, after Holy Communion, the second most important way to communion with God is through prayer. It is prayer that cleanses the heart when Christ comes to dwell therein, and thereafter Christ's words become reality - the Kingdom of God is within you.

The Metropolitan of Nafpaktos is truly a blessed man. There are very few people whose works have touched my life in the way his have, and I highly recommend each and every one of the books he has written, which are written with love for God and neighbour. Kirsty Horsey is a Senior Lecturer in Law at Kent Law School, teaching contract and tort law to undergraduate students across all years. Her research interests lie in the overlap of medical and family law, particularly in the area of assisted reproduction, and in public bodies' liability for negligence. In 2007, Kirsty was the joint recipient of the Barbara Morris Learning Support Prize, awarded by the University of Kent for teaching excellence.

Erika Rackley is a Professor of Law in the Law School at Durham University. She has taught tort law at Kent, Leicester and Durham Universities. Her research interests are broadly in the field of feminism, gender and law, particularly in relation to judicial diversity. She is co-editor of 'Feminist Perspectives on Tort Law' (Routledge, 2012).
