But it is expensive, though cheaper than college courses if one is able to self-learn and the knowledge contained in the book is sufficient for what one needs to accomplish.

The statistics are basic for the college level but I think it is valuable to see the methods applied to a specific topic such as this with targeted examples, and valuable to someone that may not have had much exposure to statistics or really grasped the subject very well.

Though I use some of the statistics and aggregations on a monthly basis in creating what I am asked to, there have been some "wow" moments in the book for me. Although I have knowledge of the statistics, when one is in the "grind" we don't always stop and think what else could be done to add value and knowledge. One such bit of knowledge was applying future value to a retention bonus. No one in the organization had thought to see if it was feasable to set aside a sum of money at present value to generate the remainder of the retention bonus via intrest at its due date. While money is in interst bearing vehicles, none is in accounts with this specificity.

Thanks to the authors section on models I am now beginning to frame some up.

The statistical teaching is solid, the methodology seems solid, and as a textbook there are chapter questions and answers.

There is an Excel file of the datasets at the publishers website so one can work the examples in the book, the workbook also includes an index for each dataset listing dataset number, chapter, item (page number, category selection, examples, etc.), and any tables they are used in.

I feel this book is good for a student, a practicing professional that deals with compensation, and good for those just wanting to learn about the subject and even for basic stats (I think the examples tied to a real world problem are valuable for those learning stats in a non-formal environment).

For me it has helped to break out of the methods I inherited (this is the way we do it), apply some things I knew but hadn't thought to apply, and add value for my employer.

An interesting book. It comes across as a college textbook of sorts. And it is hard to love a college textbook. Thus I cannot rate the book higher than a four for starters. I was an accounting major in college, and I had to take Statistics 201 and 202 as a sophomore in order to graduate. As I read this book I recognized just about everything mentioned regarding the statistics discussed. Of course, I earned 6 credits spread over two semesters in statistics, and this book looks like it would be worth no more than 2 college credits if a course were built around it.

I have a little bit of an issue with the outline of the book. It seems to me that chapters 3-10 plus 17 should be grouped together as a Part I, and chapters 11-16 should be grouped together as a Part II. That way the basics of statistics are grouped together and then the applications of statistics to compensation analysis are grouped together. The material covered between pages 319 and 355 probably should be grouped as Appendix A (Miscellaneous Topics), the Glossary should be made Appendix B, and the Answers called Appendix C. Poor organization of a college textbook lowers the rating by yet another star.

This book is all about explaining to the reader the need and the how to of converting raw compensation data into information that can be analyzed and used in decision making processes. You'll need to become expert at summarizing data with tables, graphs, and charts. And you'll need to be able to use statistical formulas on the data often times in order to make meaningful sense of it. This book explains this quite well.

I guess my main question after reading the book is whether a compensation expert should simply take the two classes I took in college and then apply that material to the world of setting compensation levels for companies. Or should they read the instant book where statistics is certainly covered, but the coverage is definitely watered down? The price of the book is in keeping with college textbooks, but it is not too bad. It might be a good idea to get the book as an overview of what to consider when analyzing compensation for a job. And if you want more coverage of statistics, then take the college classes I took. 3 stars!

Excellent textbook with many examples. Perfect for the classroom and for self-study.

This is a peerless introductory textbook. It starts very gently and relying on intuition and only later introduces rigor in a manageable way. There are lots of exercises and examples: this is a book to be followed with pencil and lots of paper. On the back side I wished that some of the examples were more thoroughly explained. In particular there are a handful cases where the author just states an "obvious" probability model and then goes on solving it without further explanations and leaving the students hanging on without a clue on why the model was specified that way. I also think there are more than enough examples using casino and card games. I wished to see more examples related to the natural sciences and engineering, where you usually do not have the advantage of knowing the sample space of the problem! These comments notwithstanding, a great book that is also a joy to read. Perfect for both the classroom and for self-study!

Great fun to read if you know the subject, but hard to learn from

I used this as the textbook in an undergraduate course on probability. I enjoyed it a lot. It has many delightful examples drawn from court cases, gambling, and other real situations. The author's love and enthusiasm for the subject shows on every page. However, my students found the book incomprehensible. When I polled my class of 65 students after 8 weeks, I was shocked to discover that all 65 of them preferred to have no textbook at all than to have this one.
The first half is intended to build one's intuition but is crammed with counter-intuitive examples and clever, elegant arguments that novices cannot appreciate. Formalism is delayed until the second half. If I had to do it over again, I would start with the second half, which is logical and self-contained, and finish with some of the cleverness in the first half. But I will never teach beginners from this book again.

Illuminating and spellbinding

As an instructor who has taught an introductory probability course many times, I find the third edition of Understanding Probability an excellent textbook for a first course in probability. The author is known for his expertise and enthusiasm for probability, and this book captures that spirit. Drawing from rich and spellbinding examples, he illustrates the basic principles and ideas of probability and statistics in a clear and intuitive way that students will find illuminating. The material on conditional probabilities and Bayesian inference is the best introductory material on these topics I have ever seen. The book's historical comments, well-designed exercises, and explanations of famous paradoxes all add to the pleasure of exploring and understanding probability. Overall, the book does a very nice job at finding a balance between rigor and readability.

Dusty and Hannah....love love loved it!!!!

Could not wait to get my hands on this book! With the little snippet we got from the last Pistols book....I was excited to read more about Dusty and Hannah and what was going on between the two of them! Dust is the president of the Deadly Pistols MC and he's never thought about anything but the MC and even more so never thought he'd be settling down. Hannah is one of his club Brothers little sister, which makes her off limits and in a way forbidden. But whenever these two are around eachother ,it's hot.
War is coming for the Pistols while trying to take down a rival MC and that means Dusty needs his head in control.
Hannah hasn't been truthful with everyone about how she can live the lifestyle she does, and let me tell you the walls are closing in and it's not pretty.
When these two finally get together, they are explosive. But Hannah knows that staying will only bring harm to those she loves. Dusty stops at nothing to bring her home. I loved this book, and was not disappointed!!!! Great series....author knows her stuff with these MC books!!!

Never Wed an Outlaw by Nicole Snow....Get ready for an amazing ride, this one roller coaster of a ride that you can't get off, it holds you until the last word. This story keeps your turning pages and on the edge of your seat with suspense, crime, hot sex scenes, love, very hot bikers and fantastic characters . Nicole Snow is an author that knows how to suck you in and not let go. This is a must read, so make sure you buy it. I was given a complimentary book in exchange for an honest review.

Hannah has it all the brains the mansion the dream job and a life free of childhood drama or so it seems.... what the people who love her don't know is that she made a deal with the devil himself to get it and has been paying the price ever since. Dom is the Mafia leader that loaned Hannah the money to start her dream company and he is asking for miracles in money laundering that Hannah isn't sure she can pull off or he is threatening to kill her and everyone she loves. Dusty is Hannah's brother's best friend and MC president and she has had a crush on him for years but when things start to get steamy between them she tries to push him away because she is afraid to get close to anyone with the threat of Dom over her head. When Dusty finally breaks down her walls and they form a relationship he comes home one night to find two of Dom's thugs in the house with Hannah and ends up killing them and demanding to know the truth which Hannah is only too happy to finally reveal to the man she loves. Dusty and Hannah get married and things seem to be going fine until Dom tries to have her abducted and she runs scared for 7 months until Dusty and the MC find her at the same time that Dom and his thugs do while she is in labor with a baby no one knew about. The suspense and the fast pace of this novel are amazing and unable to resist absolutely loved it!

About the Author
Dr. Ed Dufresne (1941And#8211;2013) was a bold, compassionate minister of the gospel. After a dramatic conversion, Dufresne immediately began serving in the ministry of helps. He later pastored for nearly fifteen years, traveled full-time for over twenty years, and founded Ed Dufresne Ministries (now Dufresne Ministries) and the World Harvest Bible Training Center, a school for the training of believers in operations of the Holy Spirit and in living a victorious life through the power of God's Word. Other outreaches of Ed Dufresne Ministries included evangelistic tent crusades that reach out to the poor and needy through distributing food, clothing, and toys. In 2013, Ed Dufresne died tragically in a plane crash at age 72. Ed Dufresne's wife, Nancy, now carries on the ministry.
