My friend, Ken Fong, found the book so compelling that he bought a bushel so he can give a copy to each of his friends as he ran into them in daily encounters. At age 90, this is most likely the last book by Lee Kuan Yew. Lee was Singapore’s first prime minister in 1959 and led the city state to full independence in 1965 when the rest of Malaysia rather unceremoniously invited Singapore to go their separate ways. By the time he stepped down in 1990, Singapore has been transformed into a First World metropolis. His is a legacy of what good government is like and how a successful national leader should behave.

As the book jacket stated, with little else left to prove, he looks ahead to offer his unvarnished view of the future shape of the world. In reading his view of the world, the reader will come to understand the core beliefs of this remarkable man. Some of these include:

(1) For any nation to succeed, clean government is a must. Road to a clean government is to pay the civil servants generously so that there is no reason for corruption. For those that do stray and gets caught, the punishment needs to be harsh for betraying the public trust.

(2) Democracy is no panacea. If the citizens are poorly educated and have no idea of what democracy is all about and if the country lacks a history of progressive thinking and culture of individual equality, the introduction of democracy will fail. As Lee predicted in his book, winter inevitably followed Arab Spring because tribal based feudal systems of the Middle East cannot nurture democracy.

(3) Education is the necessary foundation to any successful developing nation and the access to quality education must be equal to all citizens, male and female. Educated workforce is vital to economic development and a growing economy gives the population opportunities to a better life and thus a willingness to support their government. Thus in his view, the caste system will always hold India back from realizing its full potential and keeping women from education will block the development of Islamic countries.

(4) Diversity in a population trumps homogeneous population because diversity means more diverse gene pool and greater range of creative thinking and capacity for innovation. From his point of view, the U.S. greatest strength is its welcoming attitude towards immigrants. By the same token, Japan’s inability to accept anything foreign, even ethnic Japanese who has lived abroad is the root of its inevitable decline.

Hi book deals with major global topics and each major regions of the world. On China, his impression of Xi Jinping is in the “Nelson Mandela class of persons,” and Deng Xiaoping is undoubtedly the most impressive international leader he has ever met. Key difference between the US (a benign power) and China is that China does not believe in “evangelizing their form of government.” His biggest concern on China is if the future young generation of Chinese, not having experienced the challenges of China’s difficult past, gets overly nationalistic and aggressive.

From his visits to the U.S, “I came to appreciate fully the dynamism of the entrepreneurial American.” Lee sees long-term success of the U.S. resting on its ability to continue to attract “bright and restless immigrants from the world.” As for the competing influences of the U.S. and China in Asia, he felt that even though the US military budget is still six times greater than that of China, China has advantage of proximity in competing for influence in its neighboring states. He seems to think that both sides need to find mutual accommodations around a stale mate.

Lee is considerably less optimistic about Europe. He sees two major hindrances. The flaw behind the Euro is monetary integration without fiscal integration between 27 nations with wide and disparate stages of economic development. He sees no hope for fiscal integration ever. Secondly, Europe is afflicted with the welfare state mentality and stifling labor laws that discourage entrepreneurialism, innovation and striving for productivity. Rather condescendingly, Lee thought Europe might be able to get away with the welfare state mind-set if they were competing with Fiji or Tonga.

The book jacket endorsements list some of world’s who’s who as heads of state, diplomats and international notables. But I don’t think that was the reason Ken liked the book so much that he became a volunteer propagandist of Lee’s worldview. In Lee, he sees and the world sees a great statesman who successful synergized his impeccable western education with his innate Asian values to show the world how a small port city can integrate into the global economy and let the people thrive. He has a lot to say and I hope the politicians in Washington will read his book.

Not for everyone

Oh, I loved this, even though it made me squirm in discomfort. Hunky, muscle man (pretend) pirates! Adam and Tyler aren't gentle with Lucas. They push him into things, often times cruelly, and don't really respect his right to self discovery at his own pace. Tyler is particularly offensive, though since Adam holds the reigns, he is the one to blame.

Don't read this if dubious consent and domination are turn offs!

Even though I was uncomfortable, the tension in this book is perfect, and I really loved reading it.

I read a lot of mixed reviews all being based on the one character being too much. I think the characters couldn't have been more real for the setting. The characters were catty and real and struggling and deflecting and... I like that this book isn't just a standard meet love struggle hea. There is more than one struggle. More than one personality. Not every person fits a box. We are all different and this author found the different and put it in a gay island paradise bubble.

I read the first of this series and loved it, but was completely turned off to see the high prices on the next two novellas. So when I saw the trio for just 99�, I grabbed it and read it in one weekend. Loved it! Slightly more Dom/sub than I like, but I loved the sex and how their relationship progressed.

Roger L. Lundblad, Ph.D.

Roger L. Lundblad is a native of San Francisco, California. He received his undergraduate education at Pacific Lutheran University and his PhD degree in biochemistry at the University of Washington. After postdoctoral work in the laboratories of Stanford Moore and William Stein at the Rockefeller University, he joined the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He joined the Hyland Division of Baxter Healthcare in 1990. Currently Dr. Lundblad is an independent consultant and writer in biotechnology in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He is an adjunct Professor of Pathology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Editor-in-Chief of the Internet Journal of Genomics and Proteomics.

Fiona M. Macdonald, Ph.D., F.R.S.C.

Fiona M. Macdonald received her BSc in chemistry from Durham University, UK. She obtained her PhD in inorganic biochemistry at Birkbeck College, University of London, studying under Peter Sadler. Corinne Michaels writes the best stories!

Corinne Michaels has come up with another winner! Loved this story of Presley and Zach. A story that comes full circle 17 years later of 2 young people in love only to be torn apart by Zach's desire for a baseball career. Presley goes on to marry someone else and has twin boys. Her husband commits suicide and she is forced to go home to her parents ranch. Her despair over her husband and getting on with her life is conflicted with Zach coming back into her life. She feels guilt and other emotions that cause her lots of pain. I loved this book because of its raw emotion and conflict that comes up with her first love reentering her life. We can all identify with the feelings of our first love and what if and Presley actually goes through what maybe we have thought about our first love coming back into our life and what would happen. I thought this story had a lot of depth and character development. I so love this author and look forward to her next book in this series.

I have so many thoughts on this book. So many that this review may just be a smorgasbord of thoughts. Not even 5 minutes into the book and the ugly crying began. It started with Presley and her family's life getting turned upside down in the worst way possible. She is left with no choice but to move herself and her boys back to a place she hasn't been in years, one she used to call home. Presley and her kids have to learn their new normal out on the ranch and away from the big city, all while she reconnects with family, friends and her former fianc�. Zach and Presley were the couple that everyone was envious of, but when it ended, it left them both completely heartbroken. Time and life have changed them, but the one thing that hasn’t changed is their love for each other. This book is about love, loss, forgiveness, second chances and hope. Personally, I had a connection with the beginning of the story and it broke me all over again when I read it because it was so real. How people handle grief differently, the raw emotions that are felt, the need to protect your children and your heart from any more pain and how one decision can affect the rest of your life was all depicted so well. Sure, it was not difficult to predict how it would end, but I don’t think that took away from how well this beautiful story was told. I am so looking forward to reading more about the Hennington men! Thank you Corinne Michaels for writing this incredible book, it definitely gave me all the feels!

When you are a teenager and you are in the midst of your first big love, you feel invincible. You feel as if nothing will bring you down, that your love will last forever.

Sometimes it does.

But most of the time, Real Life tosses major complications your way.

Such is the case with Presley and Zach. They didn't just fall in love as teenagers, they slammed into it, helpless to feel anything other than full-bodied, full-hearted, fully realized love for each other. They managed to make it work even when Zach left Texas for a baseball scholarship at a college in Maine. Surrendering her own dreams of culinary school, Presley followed him there. And then, on the cusp of her freshman year, things changed. Real Life threw a major league complication.

Now, seventeen years later, Presley has survived a betrayal so gut wrenching and catastrophic that she has no choice but to return to the home she has all but forsaken. The one positive? Zach won't be there.

Wrong.

Oh, he is THERE, faithful readers. And all of the misunderstandings of the past two decades are about to rain down upon your former lovers, with each needing to confront the other in order to move forward.

At first glance, this is a "second chance romance." But Corinne Michaels has more going on than that. Presley abandoned her past in exchange for her future, but when that future imploded, she had to return home. Michaels examines what happens when the thing you swore you would never do becomes the very thing you must do in order to survive. At stake is not just Presley, but her two sons as well. Presley has decided that the only breaks she can make in her life are clean ones, leaving nothing lingering. As she discovers when she returns home, though, you can't live like that. You can't excise people from your life. This is a lesson Presley needs to learn not once, not even twice, but three times.

Zach has lessons to learn, too. He needs to accept his role in what happened to his and Presley's relationship, just as he needs to accept his role in what happens from here. Just because he makes the right decision for him does not mean it's the right decision for Presley, too, or for the two of them together.

No decision in a relationship, whether friendly or romantic, happens without it affecting the the two people involved, as well as those around them. Michaels illustrates this repeatedly in the book. Staying isn't merely a question for Zach or Presley, it's also for their friends and families.

Not that the book is heavy and depressing. Corinne Michaels includes some deliciously spectacular hot headboard rocking, the stuff of which quiver is made of. Strap on your vibrators, girls. You will need them.

Considering Michaels subtitled the book "Return to Me #1," you can assume that there will be more in the series. I look forward to them all. Corinne Michaels writes in a way that keeps you riveted to her story, makes you care about her characters, and makes you squeeze your thighs together.
