Once in New York City, she uses it to plant flowers, which she sells to supplement her income from the millinery shop where she works. The implement is employed in a variety of ways over her lifetime, including clearing a pond for ice skating, digging postholes for fences on the farm she shares with her new husband, planting seeds for an apple orchard, and adding coal to the stove to keep her children warm. Azarian's accomplished woodcuts and watercolor illustrations adroitly convey the determination of a strong woman who lives a good, but often not easy, life. Through one or two sentences per page, the story shows her fortitude as she experiences the highs and lows of life, confident in the knowledge that, with her shovel, she can succeed at anything through her own ingenuity and hard work.

Gr. 1-4. When Miss Bridie left her thatched cottage in Ireland in 1856, she could have taken a chiming clock or a porcelain figurine. Instead, she takes a shovel, which serves her in good stead throughout her life. She uses it to steady herself on the ship to a new place, to dig a garden, and to clear a snowy path to a moonlit frozen river, where she meets the young man she will marry. The staid text has no frills, mimicking Miss Bridie's plain life. As she uses her shovel to plant apple trees on her farm, bank the land during a flood, and, when she is old, bury her husband, children will see that Miss Birdie takes life as it is offered, with an equanimity that faces down adversity and holds close moments of joy. Not every child will be taken with a story that follows the life of a young woman as she grows old. Yet the care and crafting evident here must be admired. Caldecott award-winner Azarian's sturdy woodcuts are an excellent choice to illustrate daily life in mid-nineteenth-century America, and her pictures catch some of the emotions that the text shies away from: the small smile of contentment that comes from working on the farm; the sorrow when a fire burns down everything Miss Bridie has worked for. Wonderful book. Lyrical text and, as usual, Azarian's illustrations are fabulous, she's a real Vermont treasure and this book is one of our all-time favorites. Life, death, and everything in-between. Does not talk down to kids.

With Visual Explanations, Edward R. Tufte adds a third volume to his indispensable series on information display. The first, The Visual Display of Quantitative Information, which focuses on charts and graphs that display numerical information, virtually defined the field. The second, Envisioning Information, explores similar territory but with an emphasis on maps and cartography. Visual Explanations centers on dynamic data--information that changes over time. (Tufte has described the three books as being about, respectively, "pictures of numbers, pictures of nouns, and pictures of verbs.")

Like its predecessors, Visual Explanations is both intellectually stimulating and beautiful to behold. Tufte, a self-publisher, takes extraordinary pains with design and production. The book ranges through a variety of topics, including the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger (which could have been prevented, Tufte argues, by better information display on the part of the rocket's engineers), magic tricks, a cholera epidemic in 19th-century London, and the principle of using "the smallest effective difference" to display distinctions in data. Buy all of his books, not just this one

Tufte's books are not books, they are masterpieces, collector's items.
He has received so many accolades that one more won't add to his credibility.
These are among the most significant non-fiction books (there are a half dozen in an informal series) ever written, and an absolute must for anyone even marginally involved in producing information graphics.
*** And by the way, if you ever get the chance to see Tufte in person, do not miss it.
I've seen him twice, maybe $500 a pop. Worth every penny.
The man is a genius who is the primary influence in defining an industry.
Needless to say, the books are each graphically exquisite.

Great for Engineers

My fiance wanted this as a present, she's an engineer.

While engineers may be great at making great results, presenting the information is still a challenge (especially to customers and management).

She really likes this book. It provides a great guide on how to present information so that other engineers and the 'layman' can understand it. Data presentation can be quite a problem for engineers, and this book does a fantastic job at providing methods and means for producing useful and meaningful visual representations of findings.

I'm not an engineer 'per se,' but I'm a degreed Mathematician. I flipped through the book, and it seems as though the book does a very good job at helping us that may be poor at presenting our technical ideas in a way such that it is easily comprehensible to others - in particular others that are not mathematicians or engineers.

This aside, the limited reading I did was pretty easy, and his ideas and points were easy to comprehend and well articulated.

Not all Tufte Books are created equal

Depending on your training and experience, Professor Tufte's books will be more or less useful. In all, I find he has a penchant for overstatement. But in his statements of what should be the obvious he can be inspiring, if not always revelatory. I bought the trilogy, as this would seem de rigeuer. But honestly, "Visual Explanations: Images and Quantities, Evidence and Narrative" captured that essentials of his contribution I felt. In lieu of "Envisioning Information," I'd say buy the Yaschen edition of Oliver Byrne's "The Elements of Euclid" or simply read what's been said of it over the years. And the purchase of Tufte's poster of Napoleon's march should all but obviate need for "The Visual Display of Quantitative Information" If you don't get it with the poster, the book is unlikely to do much to help,,.

I love catching up with some of my favorite book characters. Honestly I would probably read anything that continued a story I loved.

This is the first of a three part serial and it was short and sweet. Cash and Olivia are married but having trouble getting pregnant, when an old girlfriend, Sophie, shows up and says that Cash has a 9 year old daughter. There's lots a questions being asked about the truth of her statements and what her and Cash's past really is.

A couple of things that had me scratching my head:
1. Did I miss a novella or did I just completely miss the end of the last book or something? It felt like I was dropped in mid conversation after Sophie showed up at Christmas. I felt like I missed a pivotal moment somewhere.
2. Who is Sophie? It seems like I should know her but it's obvious Olivia doesn't so maybe I didn't miss her before?
3. I know it's a serial and therefore short with a cliffhanger, but it felt like it stopped at the end of a chapter instead of the end of a book. There didn't seem to be much happening besides questioning Sophie's sincerity.

That said, it's obvious Cash and Olivia are still head over heels in love with each other. It seems like they're putting on a united front in regards to Sophie and this long lost daughter (if she really even is his daughter). There's lots of angst and suspicion going around and I haven't stopped thinking about how this story will develop. I'm hoping for no stupid drama but Cash is already holding lots of things close to the vest and away from Olivia so things could get ugly but I hope not. Whether the kid is Cash's or not, I wanna smack Sophie for lots of things like trying to pull one over on Olivia and keeping a kid away for NINE years.

Im definitely on the edge of my seat for the next installment. Hopefully some questions will be answered and Olivia will show Sophie who's in charge.

Reunited with a favorite couple

First let me say you really need to have read the "Bad Boy" series, as well as "A Davenport Christmas" to understand this story! This first installment picks up at the cliffhanger we were left with in the Christmas book. Each of the 3 novellas are actually all part of 1 book (incidentally Ms. Leighton is publishing this in even smaller increments weekly on her website each Friday. You must subscribe to her site to receive the password to access them, though the subscription is free.), so expect the first 2 to end without resolution. It is my understanding that the 3 novellas will be released as one full novel, perhaps in August (but don't quote me on that date).

All that said, I am so happy to have Cash and Olivia back! It is a bit stressful at times knowing that Sophie is up to no good, but Cash is nobody's fool and is not just taking Sophie's word for things. Although Olivia is hurt and anxious due to Sophie's arrival and bombshell announcement, she rallies quickly and cautiously urges Cash to get to know his "daughter". I think it is clear to everyone that Sophie is up to something (getting Cash back for sure), but her end game is unclear at this point.

I love, love, LOVE Ms. Leighton's books and Cash and Olivia are one of my favorite couples, so I'm so excited to catch up with them! I have it on good authority (I emailed the author) that Cash and Olivia will get their HEA...soon, I hope. If you have read the other books in this series you will love these as well! On a side note, a new character (not Sophie or her daughter) is introduced later in this book and he will be a central character in M. Leighton's new series that comes out August 4, 2015…so if you're a fan of her books get ready to meet her newest Alpha hero! Happy reading!!!

Awe more cash, with a sprinkling of Nash thrown in.

I started reading the chapters as they were appearing on Michelle's website, but flipping life got in the way so I was delighted they were then released for kindle.

Happy to get more Cash & Olivia with everything moving along nicely, she wanted to complete their family by giving Cash a baby, heartbreaking when pregnancy doesn't happen immediately. I cannot even begin to understand that feeling, my hubby only had to look at me to get me pregnant.

Then when superbitch arrives, spoiling what was a lovely Christmas meal, all Olivia's calming nature took a hike, then her poor father has to have heart surgery, Olivia was such a trooper even though she though her world as she knew it was collapsing, Cash's love for her never faltered. They have and share a great love.

There were things amiss with Sophie, the ex and Isabella, the little girl brought back into Cash's life under the impression that she is his daughter, even looking like Cash, they firmly believe she is his daughter only causing Olivia to feel that disheartened that she wasn't the one to give Cash his first child.

I loved how Olivia was able to overcome these feelings and help Cash adjust to being a father. Cash and Olivia were/are a formidable team.

Even when the DNA clinic gets totaled, they still find a way of getting to the truth.
I loved how carefree Isabella was around Cash & Olivia and became subdued around her mother.

OOH, Jason King and I gust notice he's getting his own book, hmmmm he was a hunky go-getter had ways of extracting information.

After a great weekend, Cash & Olivia get an agonising phone call, that's when they find out the truth and are left dealing with the aftermath of a conniving Sophie.

The player registry is a must for those who played or had relatives or friends who played in the minor football leagues that populated the expanse of the nation, especially throughout the 1960's. Gill, Maher, and Brainerd already have a stellar reputation for meticulous research and providing an avalanche of facts and figures. A step into the past

Enjoyed the book as it brings back some memories especially since our town had a team in the old Continental Football League. I'm researching that same team and this book filled in some of the missing data. If there is one area that would finish off the book would be some photos of the teams, players or game action of that time. But if you are looking for a bit of history in the football that was called "semi-pro" then this is the book you want.

A true specialty book not for the Sunday couch NFL fan. As complete as it can possibly be. This book is for the absolute non NFL football historian. You really have to know your football to enjoy this book which is why I think it is great. No pictures, just MASSIVE DETAILED text, schedules, rosters and game results of every minor league football franchise under the sun from 1951 to 1985. If you are thinking Sunday NFL then this is NOT the book for you as it's everything else but NFL.
