Great work

Wayne Johnson was the chief investigator for the Chicago Crime Commission and in that position was always endlessly helpful to crime writers doing research on the Chicago Mob. So, basically, if an organized crime expert needed an answer on the Chicago Mob, Wayne Johnson was the guy to see. Now Wayne has placed all that knowledge in this great books of interesting case loads about the mob and the murders it commits. Its clearly and cleverly written, is complete in its facts and filled with photos. Buy this book, its well worth it.

As a former police officer, Dr.Johnson knows, "hands on", the thrill of the chase! In his book he's took to giving a brief, yet telling paragraph, sometimes more, regarding the deceased and how the came about their present states!! Being an Outfit "buff", I particularly found those related or in some way connected to the Organized Crime organization known as the Syndicate/Outfit, as the most appealing!! From Irish northsiders to straight off the boat Italians on the City's West Side, just a few examples of what Dr.Johnson has written in his mammouth book!! Thanks for the privilege of the read Dr.Johnson, a top notch book that deserves to be on any crime historians mantle/bookshelf!!!

Fabulous!

Payne does a fabulous job explaining Narrative Therapy. I especially like that right off the bat, in chapter one, he gives an overview of Narrative Therapy from start to finish, wrapping up with ending therapy, all in 17 pages! That gave me the needed visual picture of the process. He goes on to explain narrative therapy in an understandable, and thorough format, quoting Micheal White often. I highly recommend this book as an introduction to narrative therapy for the helping professionals.

A lovely book

To my mind this is one of the very best books on narrative therapy available today. Payne’s work is philosophically coherent, grounded in practice, clearly written, and easy to follow. For all of these reasons, I often recommend this book to students and practitioners interested in learning more about this approach. But as a practitioner myself, hungry for new ideas and challenges, I found Payne’s work interesting in another respect. One often finds that narrative therapy books focus on summarizing the thought and practice of Michael White and David Epston (narrative therapy’s primary architects). And in some ways, this is what Payne seems to set out to do. However, what I enjoyed most about this book is that it is his voice, rather than that of White or Epston, that comes through (something which White himself appreciated about the book). Payne engages thoughtfully, intelligently, and sometimes critically with accepted narrative thought and practice. Something in his style of writing makes one think of this approach not as a fixed set of tools, but as a practice to be engaged with, related to, thought about, and questioned. Payne helps readers to understand certain foundational principles of narrative therapy, but at the same time invites us to ask questions, to stretch our thinking, to probe a little further. I don't know if this was his intention, but I feel he has done us a service by adding something to – and not merely reproducing the accepted story of - this young, enormously exciting, and growing field of thought and practice. I think it’s a great book.

Kindle Version Definitely Not User-Friendly!!

Unfortunately I had to return this encyclopedia to Amazon within an hour of purchasing it as it's kindle version doesn't have a page locator which would make working with it a nightmare from an academic-research point of view. This is a great pity as I was really delighted to have found that it had a kindle version. Major mistake by its kindle designers!

Good but....

Great information, an excellent starting point for any assignment or major easy at Uni. But no table of contents? makes it very hard to navigate. The book can be referenced just check out APA but like the last review page noted numbers will help a lot, for most teachers don't have access to a digital copy to check where the reference is coming from. Overall I'm happy with the product and a great start for any language teacher or student out to turn their physical library into a digital one but work is needed on the above points.

James R Lewis is a leading scholar of New Religious Movements. He has published a number of books including: Cults in America, and the Oxford Handbook of New Religious Movements which both won CHOICE book awards. In the area of New Religions and violence, he has edited anthologies on the Branch Davidians, the Solar Temple, and, most recently, a general collection on Violence and New Religious Movements. Carole M. Cusack is Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Sydney. She researches contemporary religious trends and her books include Invented Religions: Imagination, Fiction and Faith (Ashgate, 2010) and The Sacred Tree: Ancient and Medieval Manifestations (Cambridge Scholars Publishing), 2011. Outstanding reseasrch done by the author on weaving into his writings the historical facts of how the Jewish temple was organized and was shocked to realize that power and money was behind the perceived threat that Jesus posed to the Jewish sahnedrin (71 Jewish religious and secualr leaders). I read the Day Christ Died and enjoyed it so much, that I bought this for a friend of mine. I have not read the other half to this book. I love the life of Christ and really enjoy narratives written about it, especially the Bible and secondarily other books.

Great read

I absolutely loved this book and I've read many mythology and folklore books focusing on different groups. The book was narrated in an engaging manner, grammatically sound, flowed smoothly and and overall was a great read. Additionally, there are a vast selection of stories from different Native American groups, which was fantastic and gave a more rounded view of Native American storytelling. Some of the stories were more violent and creepy than I was expecting and it definitely touched upon sexuality, but many cultures do that in their storytelling and I found it refreshing.

If you enjoy mythology and folklore and are searching for something different from the tradition Greek and Brothers Grimm flooding our markets, I would pick this book up and it's really inexpensive if you pick it up used. I don't read books more than once often, but I probably will with this.

Wonderfully eclectic and fascinating compendium, satisfying if you want more native american stories

I first read excerpts from this book when I was in middle school and have been looking for it ever since. These stories are important to the cultural understanding of Native Americans, their history, and where a lot of their values stem from, and if you do not hear these stories orally, this is a great resource for a lot of them.
The stories are organized by themes such as creation/ heritage stories, cataclysms and natural disaster myths, etc. I haven't finished the book (there is a lot of content) but so far it provides concise summaries and context for each story such as what tribe the story is for/ about, some biographical information about the orator and their oral tradition, as well as location and some significant historical facts about the time periods when historians believe the stories could have originated.

These stories are odd. They're very interesting but (maybe due to the translation) they sometimes are really hard to understand the moral of the story. And sometimes there will be one line in the story that is softly explicit and it's worded funny so it catches you off guard and makes you laugh. Still a very entertaining book with lots and lots of stories from many many different cultures.

My Favorite Play Ever

This is my favorite play ever. I have lost track of how many times I have seen it in produced in different cities. Every time I see it I come away with something new. I love being able to read it. If you like bold, thoughtful plays this is for you. It is one of the most interesting treatments of what the love and grace of Christ means and role we may play accepting it. Warning though, do not read this play if you are easily offended by by strong language or Biblical themes presented in a non-traditional way.

I had such high hopes.
Maybe it's because I have a theological education, but I found this trite and eye-rollingly predictable. It purports to be a fresh, contemporary take on Judas but I thought it felt very dated -- something right out of the 70's.
Maybe you have to see it.

Guirgis writes from the heart and leaves it all on the page

Stephen Adly Guirgis is a playwright that as a young person living in an urban city you feel you could chill with. He's also a playwright that if you're an affluent privileged person you'd still love to meet...why? The guy makes you think.

In The Last Days of Judas Iscariot we are met with a cast of characters that are so famous and infamous that we can't help but get excited to see what's next. Where else can you see Mother Teresa and Satan take the stand on the same day in a trial set in purgatory. Comic and thought provoking at the same time.

The play focuses on what led to the downfall of Judas Iscariot, the notorious disciple. Was it really his fault? Did Jesus want him to do it? Did he still love him after the fact? This play is not an attack on christianity. If anything it is a play that spotlights spirituality and the importance of faith, whatever that may mean for the individual.

The writing is very accessible with dialogue you would hear on a modern day street corner to more refined monologue moments. If anything, this play will make you think about right and wrong and how what we opine is relative, especially if we weren't there and didn't "walk a mile" in their shoes thing.

Get this and get the Guirgis trilogy. If you're a young actor who can't find a monologue that "speaks to you" check out Guirgis's work. You'll be hard pressed not to have at least one "wow" or "that's tight" moments after reading.

Greenberg's masterpiece

The book is fantastic! The text is very precise, yet friendly and easy to follow; the problems and examples are designed very carefully. I've seen his new book (advanced engineering mathematics) but I think this old book is more student friendly. He explains everything from the very beginning and you have this good feeling that both you and the author are trying to explore things together.

The section on Linear Spaces is great. I wanted to study functional analysis and this section was a great help since it gives you a "feeling" about an abstract subject. I also enjoyed his rigorous treatment of PDE's. He mentions that when you want to apply the boundary conditions; this makes sense in the "limit sense" since the boundary is not included in the domain of your differential equation. This has a always been a question to me as a beginner and I found the answer in this book. I haven't seen books like Kreyszig or Myint-U or Farlow address such issues, yet I should say all of them are great.

I studied this book when I was taking a graduate engineering mathematics class at UT Austin. I had already studied Kreyszig; that is also very nice and easy to follow but Greenberg's book is deeper. If you are studying the subject for the first time, I think you need another book, like Kreyszig, as a supplement. Myint-U is also a good supplement for the PDE part and the method of characteristics which is briefely discussed here.

Greenberg's book is a masterpiece! I want to send him a greeting card and thank him for his great work!

Easy read

It is rare when you find a textbook which helps you to learn a subject. Foundations of Applied Mathematics is one of them. Prof. Greenberg wrote a book which explains the material so well I find it an "easy read."

Why the small font size?

No doubt this is a great book. It covers diverse topics with many worked out examples. The discussions are very clear and student friendly. My only issue is the very small font size which makes the reading tedious. I don't understand why the publisher selected small font size compared with the original version?
