Geoffrey G. Parker is a professor of engineering at Dartmouth College (effective July 2016) and a visiting scholar at the MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy. He has been a professor of management science at Tulane University since 1998.

Marshall W. Van Alstyne is one of the world’s foremost scholars of information business models, is a visiting scholar at the MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy, and holds a tenured professorship at Boston University.

' This book is the single best introduction I have read to Platform Businesses

Every so often I lead workshops on pricing strategy. For the past several years I have been telling people that if you are in a conventional business (what Parker, Van Alstyne and Choudary call a 'pipeline business') and you are competing against a platform business you have already lost. Pipeline businesses do not have winning strategies against multisided markets, or as this book calls them 'platform businesses.' This book is the single best introduction I have read to Platform Businesses. If you use (and if you are reading this you do use a Platform Business, Amazon), are working on or may compete against a Platform Business you need to read this book. I have been recommending it to my own team at TeamFit.co to my investees and to companies that come to me for pricing advice.

Platform Revolution has many strong points.It explains the feedback loops and network effects (positive and negative) that drive platform business dynamics, the chapter on monetization is excellent and the chapter on governance is a must read (I think I will send a copy to Vancouver's mayor). The book even has a short section on data ownership, which is likely to emerge as a major social issue over the next decade (ask yourself, why does the company I work for own my employee records, why don't I own them too!).

Platform Revolution is not perfect of course. My main complaint is the lack of useful diagrams. The book is sketch poor and I found that I had to keep a notebook and pencil beside me as I read to make sure I was following all of the interactions of forces and to give me some mnemonics to remember what I was reading. This is good in that it helped me to build up my own mental models, but I would prefer to have shared sketches that I could use in business planning with other people. I also found the characterization of the two sides of a market as 'producers' and 'consumers' limiting. This is not a useful model to describe many two-sided market interactions, as the authors themselves noticed when they talked about dating sites (dating sites are a good thing to study to learn a lot about very dynamic two-sided markets). I also found the discussion of Porter's Five Forces to be simplistic and dismissive. This seems to be an MIT thing as other people associated with MIT have the same blinkers. A more useful approach would be to look at how each aspect of the five forces gets drawn into platform markets.

There are some other good books to read on this theme. I would also recommend Platform Ecosystems by Amrit Tiwana, Matchmakers by David Evans and Modern Monopolies by Moazed and Johnson. But Platform Revolution is an excellent place to start.

Read this book to keep up

Disclaimers: I do not know the authors; I did buy the book from Amazon; I have no financial stake in the book; I am not a robot reviewer. My summary is that this book is essential reading for anyone who is part of any of the digital revolutions going on today. This includes those in business and those in information technology. You need to include the "platform mentality" in your business planning. I didn't give the book five stars for three reasons. One, a few references in the text seemed really out of date. Apparently no one caught those in the editing process. Second, in truth, the platform revolution started quite a while ago. Companies like CH Robinson have been successfully using it in the logistics business years before Facebook. Finally, all is not roses in platforms. Who is going to guarantee the quality of Uber cars and drivers, for example? Online reviews (like this one) are not 100% reliable and only a few bad apples can ruin the barrel. But it is an exciting time and an exciting book.

Timely broad survey of platforms, mechanisms, and issues

This a scholarly but very readable survey of platforms and their foundations, with broad scope and modest depth. As a technologist and entrepreneur I found this a very good way to quickly grasp the breadth of platforms and the transformations they cause. If you want a good Platforms 101, you won't be disappointed. This book orients you. If you want implementation details, you'll need to look elsewhere. There are many platform foundations to choose from.

These cards are a detailed review of everything in my HIM textbooks. So far they are jogging my memory for details that I learned in last year's classes. I am set to graduate in May 2015 and plan to take the exam in June 2015 and feel that these cards will play a big role in preparing me for the exam date.

A great review for those wanting to refresh their memory to prepare for the RHIT certification test. Unfortunately, the certification test contains things not contained in the books AHIMA provides you with to study from, so if you want a great review this one is where you should put your money into. I think this review was the best one to prepare with. They offer you a mock test which was helpful too. This study system does need a bit updating though, since the ICD-10-CM code set was implemented as they still have some questions from the ICD-9-CM code set. Still not sure if I passed as the test given was in a Beta version and results are still unknown. Time will tell... Besides being a great review they offer you a money back guarantee too. Hope I won't be needing it!

I purchased these to help me pass my upcoming RHIT exam. These flash cards are small which makes them easy to stash in your backpack or purse and study when you have a few extra minutes in your day. They are very detailed and cover many different core concepts which are important to understand before sitting for the RHIT. They are so detailed that they are a bit overwhelming for a flashcard.

The reason I did not give this 5 stars is due to the cards not being labeled for the domains in which the flashcard is focusing. This makes it difficult to discern what domain you are reviewing. I have found the AHIMA study guide made for reviewing for the RHIT, is much better for understanding the concepts. If you buy the guide new from AHIMA as a member, it usually cost less than buying it through Amazon. You can also register to take online assessments with a new guide.This is very helpful because you can find out what domains you are weaker in so you can concentrate on them more than the others.

About the Author

Gary Prevost is Professor of Political Science at St. John's University and the College of St. Benedict. He is the author, coauthor, or coeditor of several books, including Neoliberalism and Neopanamericanism: The View from Latin America (2002) and The Bush Doctrine and Latin America (2007).

Harry Vanden is Professor of Political Science and International Studies at the University of South Florida. He is the author, coauthor, or coeditor of several books, including Inter-American Relations in an Era of Globalization (2007) and Latin American Social Movements in the Twenty-First Century: Resistance, Power, and Democracy (2008).

Prevost and Vanden are coauthors of Politics of Latin America, Third Edition (OUP, 2009), and Democracy and Socialism in Sandinista Nicaragua (1993), and coeditors of The Undermining of the Sandinista Revolution (1997).They were both Fulbright scholars in Latin America--Prevost studied in Nicaragua, and Vanden in Peru and Brazil--and have lived and traveled extensively throughout Latin America.

This book is a good look at the political science history of Latin America. Unfortunately, the teacher thought it was a straight history book because it says Introduction. So... be wary of what you're getting into! Otherwise it's totally informative and has illustrations too

Decent guide, not worth the money

I'll keep this simple; this is a decent guide, but it's lacking in key areas. The descriptions of how you do certain things can be pretty vague, and there are several errors. While most of the time these errors will be easy to spot in-game and correct for, there will be several times throughout that you have to keep rechecking the guide, and even then you may find yourself asking "what? What is it talking about?" The worst part was the final boss; without posting any spoilers about it myself, let me just say that the strategy it outlines does NOT work, at all. I nearly lost the game trying the given strategy, and was forced to try to figure it out myself. When I did, the final boss was much easier, and it was such an obvious strategy that I can only assume only ONE author was playing the game and simply never figured out the real strategy to the boss himself, and was just forced to publish the guide anyway. HUGE letdown. It's still a decent guide, but I paid the MSRP of a whopping $25 for this guide (that's a full HALF of the price of the game itself!) and there were glaring issues and omissions. If you're reading this, you probably haven't bought the guide yet, and by now, there will probably be much better, fan-made and FREE guides online, so stay away unless you really want or need a book in your hand to walk you through each and every single step of the game. If you do buy it, just go in with your eyes open; realize that it's NOT complete, and if you're trying something like it tells you and it's just not working, then the guide is either wrong or the directions it's given you are incomplete and you need to figure it out on your own.

About the Author
John Dewey�(1859–1952) was an�American philosopher,�psychologist�and�educational reformer�whose ideas have been influential in education and social reform. Dewey was an important early developer of the philosophy of�pragmatism�and one of the founders of�functional psychology. He was a major representative of�progressive education�and�liberalism.�In 1894 Dewey joined the newly founded�University of Chicago�(1894–1904) where he developed his belief in an empirically based theory of knowledge, becoming associated with the newly emerging Pragmatic philosophy. His time at the University of Chicago resulted in four essays collectively entitled�Thought and its Subject-Matter, which was published with collected works from his colleagues at Chicago under the collective title�Studies in Logical Theory�(1903). During that time Dewey also initiated the�University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, where he was able to actualize the pedagogical beliefs that provided material for his first major work on education,�The School and Social Progress�(1899).�In 1899, Dewey was elected president of the�American Psychological Association. From 1904 until his retirement in 1930 he was professor of philosophy at both Columbia University�and Columbia University's�Teachers College.�In 1905 he became president of the�American Philosophical Association. He was a longtime member of the�American Federation of Teachers.

A Most Important Book

Derived from a series of lectures Dewey gave in 1927, The Public and Its Problems touches on virtually all the major political philosophy questions of our day. One marvels at its continued relevance into the 21st Century. Dewey, arguably America's greatest thinker, does an amazing job in sifting through the problems contemporary society faces when forming a polity.

The point Public and Its Problems brings up on more than one occasion is the need for political and social policy to incorporate the scientific method of testing and retesting to generate better results. Dewey refers to this as an experimental social method and surely felt corporate capitalism had used up its testing time and that a new socio-economic system should be tried. Public and Its Problems talks about how policies and theories need to be constantly in flux and not rigidly adhered. The social sciences would then work to investigate and interpret the results of the testing process.

One portion of the book gives a fascinating look at a puzzling quandary Dewey proffers: that being the contradiction of the French and American revolutions having a philosophy of individualism while being massive collective efforts. This section makes for some complicated reading but it's enthralling nonetheless because it touches on a fundamental political and philosophical question. It's in this chapter of the book where he goes on to pose one of the more audacious and profound points of political thought: the essential fallacy of the democratic creed being that it assumes free human beings can rule themselves. (He obviously does say democracy is a good thing given that it threw off a restrictive cloak.) Dewey goes on to elaborate on the point indicating that what's critically necessary is an improvement to the methods and conditions of debate and discussion. Public and Its Problems goes on to ostensibly say it's the corporate capitalist press that controls policy conduct by controlling public opinion. A most astute observation. Of course this opinion is of a public that hasn't found itself, Dewey asserts. He writes "the modern economic regime control present politics much as dynastic interests controlled those of two centuries ago. They effect thinking and desire." Here he touches on false consciousness and monopolistic control over our culture and institutions and the insidious way they thwart the public from finding itself and rallying for its concerns.

Most importantly, Public and Its Problems contends that the majority populace can indeed make wise decisions regarding our present day technocratic culture; the key is that they must have access to unbiased sources without a vested interest (commercial profit) in the issue. Only with a relatively independent conduit of information can the masses make informed decisions on complex subjects. Clearly Dewey would be quite dismayed to see the state of the mass media today, being wholly owned and controlled by big corporate conglomerates. He would no doubt find it nearly impossible for a public to make intelligent decisions when pseudo-fascists like Michael Savage, Joe Scarborough, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, Pat Robertson, Laura Ingram, Rusty Humphries, Michael Reagan, G. Gordon Liddy, Ann Coulter (the proud daughter of a union buster), Mike Gallagher, Bob Grant and William Kristol; along with myriad centrist status quo apologists, set the agenda. In one paragraph of the book Dewey showed incredible foresight by remarking that society "seems to be approaching a state of government by hired promoters of opinion called publicity agents." With current political discourse being dictated by PR firms it's obvious he was right on the mark eighty years ago when he made the prediction.

Dewey comes back to an important question routinely throughout, that being what are the conditions that make the transformation possible for the "Great Society" to change into the "Great Community"? The Public and Its Problems does much to stimulate thought on this vital issue that still plagues contemporary society, especially in the United States when the state was able to wage a war on Iraq when virtually ninety percent of the world was against it!

Dewey's book serves as a tremendous introduction to history's greatest pragmatic philosopher.

Important book in American Political Philosophy

Dewey's work here is hard to place: it is certainly not liberal, it is not quite progressive nor is it really socialist, it is something entirely different. This is a book that might take many readings to unearth its meaning, but is entirely worth it for everyone from historians to political scientists to citizens alike. Dewey's argument focuses most closely on where to locate the public, how to create communication, and in turn, community, and how to reinvigorate democracy through true reform. This book is so enjoyable because Dewey is addressing many of the same problems we face today.

His prose is thick, and it might seem slightly ambiguous and vague until the second reading (it surely did for me). Ultimately I thought it was well worth the time I put into it.

What happened to the voice of the public in politics and society?

Dewey, in response to Lippmann (phantom public), gives a diagnosis of what is wrong with today's fading public participation and incentive to act in politics. I do not rate this book five stars only because he gives a vague description of exactly how these conditions to upturn public voice can be met. Overall it is an excellent book for those interested in modern public issues.
