Satisfied by Jeff Manion

In Satisfied, Jeff Manion address an issue prevalent in Western Society and one that plagues Christians, especially in North America, who either through growing salaries or growing credit card debt have made the accumulation of stuff the focus of their lives. Manion talks about the reality of the old saying, “I owe, I owe, it’s off to work I go,” and it’s destructive results.

He starts with this quote, "We live in a consumer-driven, debt-ridden, advertisement saturated culture, and it will require nothing short of total transformation to adopt the heart and brain of Jesus." Manion spends the first part of the book talking about the concept of contentment and how we must learn to admire without having to acquire. To Manion, contentment is "the discipline of being fully alive to God and to others." Yes, it is easy to get caught up in the desire for more, but "if our goal is more, then whatever we have is not enough. He says, “It is like running a race where a finish line doesn't exist." It is easy to fall into this trap, where I fail to enjoy what I have because I obsess over what I lack and others have.

This is a book on giving and finances, yet Manion doesn't focus on money-saving tips, choosing instead on helping us change our focus from ourselves and our money and things to enjoying God and serving others.

I enjoyed the book, and its easy to read style.

Wise words on contentment, gratitude, and giving

Does it sometimes seem that enough is never enough? Jeff Manion, pastor of Ada Bible Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan, challenges Christians to pause a moment and reflect on their spending habits and lifestyle in Satisfied: Discovering Contentment in a World of Consumption. Manion has served for decades at Ada Bible. I never did attend when I lived in Grand Rapids but was familiar with the dynamic, growing ministry of the church. Manion's clear teaching, biblical grounding, and story-telling ability to bring to life the setting of the New Testament are evident in Satisfied and surely reflect on a successful career in the pulpit.

In Satisfied, Manion's target audience is Western Christians who, either through growing salaries or growing credit card debt (or, likely, both) have made the accumulation of stuff the focus of their lives. How easy it is in our culture to believe that what we have equals who we are. He writes, "We live in a consumer-driven, debt-ridden, advertisement saturated culture, and it will require nothing short of total transformation to adopt the heart and brain of Jesus."

One key is contentment, "the discipline of being fully alive to God and to others whatever our material circumstances." We get caught up in the desire for more, but "if our goal is more, then whatever we have is not enough. It is like running a race where a finish line doesn't exist." We might lose our contentment due to comparison with others. I know I often fall into this trap, where I fail to enjoy what I have because I obsess over what I lack and others have. "Comparison is the enemy of the satisfied life." We should foster an attitude of thankfulness for what we have and proper perspective on the blessings in our lives.

Manion is not, however, an ascetic. He acknowledges that God does want to bless us, and wants us to enjoy his blessings. "The gracious Father provides innumerable gifts and wants you to enjoy them." God gives us "a whispered invitation: 'Enjoy this.'" But he does not stop there. When he whispers that he wants us to enjoy his blessings, our response should be, "Is there anything you desire from me?" We may hear him say, "Yes, I want you to share."

Unlike many books on giving and finances, Manion doesn't focus on money-saving tips or suggestions for communal living. His project is more fundamental, to spur a change in focus from ourselves and our money and things to enjoying God and serving others. I enjoyed the book, enjoyed Manion's style, and was challenged by his substance. I am guilty of wanting more, of focusing on money and things, and of letting myself become immersed in our consumer culture. Manion provides a remedy, or at least points us in the right direction.

Book Review: Satisfied

Satisfied, while certainly convicting, did not put me on the guilt trip I'd expected. It did, however, encourage me to examine my purchasing habits and remember that true contentment does not lie in anything I can buy. Manion is upfront and honest about his own struggles to find satisfaction, and I always seem to gain more from books like this where I can identify with the author.

Although a short read, the book is packed with wisdom and some anecdotes to help drive home Manion's points. It's divided into six parts: The School of Contentment, Comparison, Identity Shift, The Challenge of Affluence, The Generous Heart and The Invitation. I found myself particularly touched by the section on Comparison, as I know that I struggle with comparing myself to others and looking at what I don't have rather than appreciating what I do have.

Each section ends with some discussion questions and suggested projects for practical application, making this book an easy one to incorporate into a small group study or class.

All in all, I found Satisfied to be a quick and enjoyable read that is challenging me to seek a counter-cultural life by focusing not so much on pursuing possessions but on seeking after God.

I agree with the previous reviewer. It's boring and difficult to read.

I am an intensivist and, every time I try reading this book, I give up in 15-30 minutes. I find microbiology and infectious diseases very interesting, and I enjoy reading everything by Dr. Crislip, including his excellent mobile app. So it's not the science that bothers me, it's the dry presentation of a bad teacher. It's also way too expensive for what's inside.

I strongly advise you to buy something else. I honestly don't know where the glowing reviews are from.

Has Proven Useful on Numerous Occasions

I bought this book for my neuroscientist son who wanted to understand his own illnesses. Turns out, it is useful as a guide for making either recommendations or informed decisions when communicating with your doctor.

For example, we've both been dealing with recurrent sinus and ear infections and this book clearly states which of the many antibiotic options might be best for that illness.

I highly recommend this book as a good addition to the educated person's book shelf.

This is a great "brush up"book for those long out of school. It gives you a better understanding about what is going on in hospitals, introduces molecular science and pathophysiology that did not exist and current thinking on different bugs. All in a book you can actually sit down and read without any pain what-so-ever.

nothing new

I had high hopes for this book, as I am definitely interested in older names. My hope when I ordered it, was that I would discover a few names I had never really considered before, but the only different hing about this book is its organization. The list of names is the same list of names you'll see in every other baby book. The descriptions were not all that helpful--erring on the side of wit rather than actual analysis of either meaning or usage. My suggestion: Buy the Baby Name Wizard book. It is not as "cute" as this one, but it lists all the same names and provides MUCH more actual information about origin, meaning, alternate usage and popularity (even by region).

Nice layout

I like this book quite a bit - the other baby name books people gave me pretty much are just endless lists of popluar names... by era, by country, by celebrity, by athlete... I really dont care what other people named their kids as much as I want to pick something thats right for my family. This book however is layed out in simple alphabetical order, noting in the comments of each name which ones meaning and/or origin, sometimes mentioning popularity or warning of potential popularity(for instance 'Edward' and 'Jacob' thanks to the Twilight series), meanings and associations to people with that name whether good or bad. It's not nearly as overwhelming as lists of thousands of names many of which are repeated over and over again in all these other books. It does include ever popluar Emma's, Aidens and so on but usually noting how popular they are and than suggesting lesser used alternatives with similar sounds or meanings. Love that!

This publication takes a more unusual approach in portraying the battles of 1944 by incorporating large amounts of photographic evidence. The photographs and their captions offer uncommon insight into the life of the average combatant under German command wanting nothing more than to survive another day. In some cases the photos dating back to 1944 are actually contrasted with the same location as seen today. That photographic evidence is effectively supported by accurate historical and archival research, including geographic data, allowing the reader to more fully understand the context of the battle and events in 1944.

About the Author
The author, Mansal Denton, is an American citizen born in 1990. He grew up in San Antonio, Texas where veteran correspondence served as a catalyst for his World War II interest. Upon entering university in Switzerland, Mansal decided to follow his passion for history. He has spent years studying the Second World War and specializes in combat histories of the eastern front. The author combines personal narratives, archival material, and published works, about it mainly soldier's publications, to accurately portray historical events.

very paltry summary

For OstFront fans, the 6 month battle of Narva is a huge epic, but it is poorly represented in the english-language literature. A good book about the battle would be epic too. This offering is an underwhelming disappointment. There are only 25 pages of text (with pics) about the 6 month siege, and the History Facts production style with large print and larger gaps between paras means there's very little detail. Its just a summary of less depth than an Osprey title. Fedorowicz could fit the text on 5 or 6 of their A4 pages! There is far more detail about Narva in Tieke's "Tragedy of the Faithful", which has about 100 dense pages on it. (tho the pages are slightly smaller, they actually contain double the text per page!) As example, Tieke has 6 pages devoted to the destruction of SS-FrW-Pz-Gr-Rgt 48 'General Seyffard', Denton gives it 4 brief paragraphs.
So why buy a book about Narva that just briefly summarises the already available info? Well, it has 40 pages of photos, and some are new and interesting of trenches, battle damaged City and armour; but as many are just small snaps of soldiers relaxing. There are some interesting OOB's and casualty breakdowns, but there are more lists of awards received which are totally padding.
The actual battle of Narva lasted long enough and involved so many units and separate battles that it should fill a big book, like Berlin or Stalingrad does. Why this author has set his sights so low is crazy. Save your coins; true value of this book = $8 or so for the pics.
... P.S. The review by Doug Nash [oddly,Doug has since removed his review; he gave 4*] utterly baffles me...its as tho we're talking about different books! Personally, I love Doug Nash's works; Hells Gate is the acme of military storytelling. Detailed original research, a beautiful blend of strategic overview & 1st person accounts, pictures & maps. Denton's book(let) is NOTHING like that. Doug, I appreciate that you want to encourage a new writer, but I'd say you've completely lost your critical objectivity on this 1! Denton has just a single, short 1st person veteran account. He uncritically quotes Whermacht bulletins & unit war diaries, which are just poor summaries anyway. And if you took out all the Tieke quotes, the book would be half as long! ANYONE who reads Otto Carius, Michael Pruett And Tieke could produce better work than this.

Simply Disappointing

AGN didn't have the battle history of AGC or AGS but it deserves better than what it receives in this book. The Soviets who broke out of the bridgehead and pushed the Germans back certainly deserves more than they received which was practically nil.

The book claims 112 pages but if you deduct the two title pages, the blank pages that were counted and the other fluff there is only 103 pages. The book is divided into two sections: a battle summary and a photo gallery but the text section also has numerous photos. If you deduct the photos from the summary section, there is only 14 pages of text (large font) devoted to combat. Needless to say there is very little detail to this book. The book is also entirely from the German perspective; there is no coverage of the Soviet side in the text.

There are five maps but only three could be considered tactical in nature and only two show German positions. For the Soviet side you get arrows of advance. The one map shows the breakout of the Oranienbaum pocket that eventually pushes the AGN back to the Narva River line. The other tactical map is the initial attack at penetrating the Narva line. The third map is the actual penetration of the Narva line in July but it just has arrows and no deployments.

There are quite a few photos, a few being half page or full page in size. They're not bad but there are no battle scenes. What you get are pictures of Narva in shambles and its river, a few German soldiers digging trenches, German soldiers at rest between battles, officers posing for pictures as well as a few field guns and panzers.
In the Appendix you have an equivalent rank chart, a general composition of German and Soviet units, a citation list, a few career profiles of key Germans, a causalty list and a few statistics. There is some useful info here.
There is a two page Bibliography of dubious value. The two books by Otto Carius and Wilhelm Tieke are the only English language books that could add to the story. David Glantz's "The Battle for Leningrad" which is not on the list also has some coverage that would be useful.

I don't like being critical of a young man who had the initiative to write a book but his efforts fell far short of the mark. When he writes his second book, I hope he knows his subject matter better and writes a more comprehensive and demanding history.

A little known campaign and a well done effort. This is a nice companion to "Panzerkampfgruppe Strachwitz". While a small book in terms of length, this volume helps fill an important niche in the history of Army Group North's futile attempts to hold back the Red Army.

John L. Hufferd has been a key technical leader and manager within IBM for more than thirty-five years and currently directs projects dealing with networks, storage, and SANs. He is the technical coordinator for the iSCSI track of the IPS workgroup in the IETF standards association.

This book is a guide to understanding Internet SCSI (iSCSI) and where it fits in the world. It contains discussions of the marketplace where appropriate and of some technology competitors, such as Fibre Channel. However, mostly there will be positioning of the various technologies to emphasize their appropriate strengths. iSCSI is based on such a ubiquitous network technology (TCP/IP) that it seems to play in many different areas that are currently dominated by other technologies. Therefore, one needs to view all iSCSI capabilities and determine its applicability to the area in which the reader is interested.

Since iSCSI is only a transport, that is, a carrier of the SCSI protocol, there is no involved discussion of SCSI itself. Many parts of the book are general enough that a thorough knowledge of SCSI is not needed. There are, however, more detailed parts of the book where SCSI knowledge would be helpful.

I wrote this book to provide both the manager and the technician with a useful understanding of the technology. Product marketing and strategy professionals should also find the information useful and meaningful. The technician should view this book as a primer, in which the iSCSI technology is discussed with enough depth that the IETF iSCSI documents should be readily understandable. Those who want to understand and build a product based on iSCSI should find this book to be a must-read, especially if they plan to dive down into the details of the IETF iSCSI drafts/standards documents.

The book attempts to service divergent readers by ensuring that, when a chapter contains in-depth technical content, the reader will be so advised by a "To the Reader" commentary, which is flagged with the iSmiley face. Organization

The book begins with a general background of the market and an answer to why iSCSI is of interest. A taxonomy of the various markets is given, along with an explanation of how iSCSI fits into them. This is followed by a short history of iSCSI so that the reader can get a sense of what propelled its development.

Next the book heads into the technology itself, with an overview that includes iSCSI layering. This shows the use of the underpinning TCP/IP technology, the concept of a session, and the structure of the message units. Various other key concepts are introduced here to ensure that the reader knows not only the importance of data integrity to storage technology, but also that new hardware is being introduced specifically to address bandwidth and latency issues. A few pages are spent explaining the iSCSI naming conventions, because of their major significance to the use of the technology.

Following the discussion of iSCSI naming conventions, the book takes the reader through the login process and the identification and option negotiation process. These processes are key in the establishment of a communication path between the host system and the storage controller. The process of sequencing the commands and data, as well as controlling the flow of commands and data, is reviewed.

Readers may forget from time to time the meanings of various iSCSI and SCSI terms, so a glossary is presented in Appendix E. As a further aid I have included in Appendix F the various acronyms used throughout this book and many of the referenced documents, especially the base IETF iSCSI drafts.

Finally, Appendix G contains the various reference sources, along with their Web page locators (in most cases). Speaking of references, bracketed citations, such as SAM2, are fully referenced in this appendix.

In iSCSI, serial numbers are always incremented and compared in what is called a 32-bit serial number arithmetic. This is a way to determine, when serial numbers wrap around, if those numbers are greater or less than other serial numbers.

The future of storage networking

This work is a thorough and insightful review of the iSCSI protocol by someone who has been a major contributor to the standard and knows the protocol parameters inside out. I highly recommend this work to anyone who wants to understand the future direction of storage area networking. Over the next few years we will see the convergence of SANs with mainstream IP networking, with iSCSI and IP SANs paving the way for much tighter integration of applications, operating systems, storage and networks. As stated in the book's title, iSCSI will be the universal connection for bringing storage into this synthesis.

Highly Recommended iSCSI Source for Technical Reader

iSCSI is a new SAN architecture that combines two popular network and storage technologies into one. Many technical people found the IETF technical specifications hard to read, since it requires backgrounds from both the networking world and the storage world to fully understand them.
As one of the iSCSI authorities in the IETF, the author has done a very good job in describing the technologies and the ratioale of the specifications one step at a time in a very detailed and organized way. This makes them much easier to understand by the technical people from two different worlds.
I fully appreciate John's efforts for creating such a great works that will be highly recommended for the time to come.

Good Starting Point on iSCSI

John has done a very good job of covering the basics of the iSCSI protocol. This is a good book for someone who is trying to get an introduction to this protocol. However, the material is presented from the viewpoint of someone who has NEVER actually built a storage system. For those people who are trying to either build an iSCSI system or want to get a comparison of this protocol with either Fibre Channel or Infiniband, this is not the right place to start. This is an excellent book for starters but is not good for serious iSCSI implementors.

I had several business meetings with Americans and I understood everything, I mean everything they said. That didn't happen to me before using Whaddaya say?. I also learned to use reduced forms to improve my speed. But the most important thing is the almost magical change in my understanding. A suggestion is to follow carefully the instructions, then listen to each conversation and repeat it many times. The book is also great source of expressions and uses, not just reduced forms. About the Author
Nina Weinstein has published twenty English language textbooks, including the fast program Vocabulary Tools for test preparation and vocabulary expansion. Some of her books are included in libraries such as Oxford University, UCLA, New York University, etc. She was a teaching fellow at Harvard University, has been a teacher trainer and has been interviewed frequently on Voice of America Radio (Wordmaster series).

Best book on Relaxed Speech ever written

If you want to speak like a Native American, this book will be very useful to you. This is an excellent book which is very organized to cover each and every reduced form (wanna, gonna, gotta etc.) with lots of examples and exercises. This book covers pronunciation changes that occur in fast speech. The audio of this book is available at author’s website www.easyenglish.us.com I bought this book and downloaded the audio files from author’s web site. I have been finding it very useful and I love this book. There are 30 chapters in this book and you can quickly learn most of it if you listen to audio of each chapter while you study the chapters. I don’t think there is any other book available in market which covers Relaxed Speech anywhere close to the contents of "Whaddaya Say". I came to know that the author field tested "Whaddaya Say", at Harvard University where she worked as a teaching fellow. I recommend this book to those who want to speak like Native Americans. I think this book is worth the price and it is beyond comparison. I am impressed with the amount of research done by author to come up with this masterpiece.

Fast-Spoken English in a Fast-Moving World

Whaddya say is a practical book for serious-minded second language learners of English who want to communicate quickly in real world settings.
Formal English listening/speaking training in pre-college classrooms prepares students to carefully articulate prepared speeches, but it lacks in preparing English language learners to listen and respond to real world conversations in dynamic domains. Typical examples (although, not included in the present book) might include conversations that take place in the stock market and conversations between pilots and air traffic controllers. In both situations, the verbal component of communications is time sensitive. Nina Weinstein's book and tapes focus on enhancing listening and speaking skills using both slow and relaxed, fast-spoken English.
Nina Weinstein outlines the most commonly used reduced forms of English sounds in twenty short chapters, introducing the most simple reduced sounds (like you --> ya) to the more complex reduced sounds that are found in advanced grammatical structures (coulda, woulda, mighta).
Whaddaya say incorporates short, yet practical conversational exercises at the end of each chapter. The exercises require the Whaddaya say cassette tape. Completion of this book, accompanied with a professional ESL instructor, will result in an increased situational and linguistic awareness of the ESL learner's surroundings.
