Top-Notch translation

I am an avid reader of mythologies around the worlds. I found that The Mahabhrata together with The Ramayana are the most sophisticated of them out there.

I know sanskrit, and I have read it both in Sanskrit and Bengali(my native language). Despite the antiquity, it matches any modern science fiction and fantasy tell. Blood and gore is way more than any average horror film. There is a good amount of sex too. The battle is truly epic, any weapon you can imagine(from sword to nuke, which can be discharged just by 'uttering some words' and many more) is there. Any vehicle you can imagine(from normal horseback to mind controlled interstellar space craft, the called vimana is there). The causalities of the battle of mahabhrata alone was 40 million men, an equal number of elephants and horses just in 18 days! The number of races matches world of warcraft easily(snakes, human beings, gods, demigods, demons, and many more). There is powerful warriors capable of annihilating the world, mystics and sages more powerful than demigods and spacefaring people going from one galaxy to another in various crafts. Then there is a lot of politics and diplomacy and other side stories.

All in all, this is the book you should read no matter who you are, at least as a science fiction tell(I am a non religious person) and when you read, you should not forget that this is a tell which is thousands of years old! I wonder why hollywood is not making a film out of it!

This English translation is the best so far. It is much lucid, easy and fun to read than any other english retelling available there and I recommend, before you read, have some basic ideas about sanskrit, as you will see some there in the book and some of them are important to understand so you can relish it properly. Then I feel, the author has shortened/omitted some parts but this is not necessarily a bad thing.

“THE MAHABHARATA A Modern Rendering” by Ramesh Menon – A Review

Throughout history, the Gods have been reputed to guide the introduction of new ages in world existence, many such occasions occurring not at all smoothly for man. Some 2000 years ago, the Christian God sent his son, Jesus Christ, into the world on a similar mission. In this instance in India, the Gods send forth, on earth, emanations of themselves for the coming of a new age, kali yuga, an age portended to be more evil than the one before it, when kings and princes had become arrogant and proud and void of justice and truth.
The main protagonists are the scions of the Kuru house – the Pandavas and the Kauravas – cousins. The earth requires blood sacrifice to accommodate the coming of the Kali yuja age, and bloodletting there is of stupendous magnitude in the Mahabharata – the Great War. The sacrifice brought only the demise of kingly rule, but the wanton slaughter of the common soldier (a mystery; but then again not a mystery). Recall again that in the Christian tradition, Jesus died on the cross, a blood sacrifice for a new age, and returned to Heaven when his mission was fulfilled. In this war, millions of men die – probably akin to the Great Flood which also ended and old age.
The Mahabharata – the Book - is an epic story, a magnificent tome, a magnum opus. The original is said to be seven times the length of the Iliad and Odyssey combined, a poem of 100,000 couplets. This prose version by Ramesh Menon is abridged but still very, very long. I have never before read a book this long (1539 pages). In printed form its bulk and volume would certainly prove a major distraction, notwithstanding the interest in the content. I was able, however, to read the book it in comfort because it was on my Kindle which has become my preferred way of reading.
But the real ease in reading a book this long came from the style and simplicity, yet lucid content of the book. Of all the pages, I was never once bored . . . not at any point. I was carried away with the fortunes/misfortunes of the cousins; with the Gods and holy men who gave boons, but usually with a condition; people on pilgrimages; curses laid on people coming true; the life given to rivers and sea, and their people; religious men on pilgrimage or in long-term meditation; forest dwellers, and demons, weird animals, among others. The ups and downs of the Great War was a saga in itself. My guess is that to depict all this in cinema faithfully and in detail, Mr. Cecil B. De Mille would have been severely challenged.
The key strength of the book is in the lucidity of the words. The words and phrases themselves throw out pictures at the reader. Some books are words and pictures; in this book the pictures jump out of the words. I met new words – lambent, luculent, coruscance; chtonic, among many more. There are also many elegant phrases: “twilight and the blue sky dying in dark crimson and turquoise” (imagine the battlefield); an arrow is returned “quick as a thought”, again among many others. There are comments on various subjects of personal interest well worth pondering: religious (the Gita); greed; vice (gambling obsession); on sin (the primal cause of sin is covetousness); on death (we are all born with a mission; when the missions of Gods and men are accomplished, they die (Jesus did say “it is done”, before expiring on the cross)); on qualities of kingship (remember Machiavelli?); on the idea of balance rather than extreme zeal in one’s calling, etc.,etc.
I recommend this book highly to all who are moved by valor, momentous occasions, good writing, and a nice little twist at the end, only hinted in the first paragraph, and in the one just gone. The book gets my top marks because it is ‘just magnificent.’

Sweeping Epic

Had the pleasure of seeing 9.5-hour stage production by Peter Brooks at the Brooklyn Academy of Music 25 years ago. Read this book in a shorter older version. Loved both. Chose the Ramesh Menon modern interpretation because I enjoyed his interpretation of the Ramayana. Would have given it five stars if the translations of certain parts were clearer and less awkward.

About the Author
New York Times best-selling author Robert Venditti broke into comics the old fashioned way- by starting out in the mailroom. He began working for publisher Top Shelf Productions in 2002, and within a few months sold them the script for The Surrogates, his first comic book series. The story was later adapted into a feature film starring Bruce Willis and Ving Rhames. Venditti went on to write the original graphic novel The Homeland Directive, as well as the graphic novel adaptations of Rick Riordan’s bestselling Percy Jackson and the Olympians novels. In 2012, he helped relaunch Valiant Entertainment’s comic book universe by writing their flagship title, X-O Manowar.�Venditti currently writes GREEN LANTERN and THE FLASH for DC Comics. He lives in Atlanta, Georgia.

Van Jensen is a former newspaper crime reporter and magazine editor who broke into comics as the writer of Pinocchio, Vampire Slayer, which was named one of YALSA’s Top Ten Great Graphic Novels for Teens. He also has written The Leg: The Remarkable Reappearance of Santa Anna’s Disembodied Limb, and GREEN LANTERN CORPS and THE FLASH for DC Comics. Flash vs Future Flash

I honestly haven’t bought an issue of The Flash since the 1980’s but I wanted to brush up on the character in preparation for the upcoming Justice League movie and Flash movie in 2018. I was impressed by the 2009/2010 Flash: Rebirth by Geoff Johns and the Robert Venditti run has been getting some very good reviews on Amazon. My initial reaction to Volume 6 ‘Out of Time’ was not positive. The art looks really amateurish and the dialogue left something to be desired. However, as I continued to read through it I became more impressed by the intriguing plot.

There are two Flashes in Out of Time, a present day version and a version from 20 years in the future who is trying to repair damage to the speed force that occurred in the present time. The future Barry Allen has abandoned his no killing rule and wants to repair tragedies that he couldn’t prevent due to time bleeding from the speed force. There is an obvious contrast between the present day Flash who makes it very explicit that he never, under any circumstances kills, and the future Flash who repeatedly kills major members of his rogues gallery.

Time travel stories generally get a bit confusing and this one is no exception. The story jumps back and forth between present day Flash, solving a crime involving stolen weapons from a group of villains he fought, as well as getting to know Wally West who is now black and having some issues with a grudge against the Flash. Meanwhile, the future Flash is working his way back through time on an inevitable collision course with the present day Flash. As in many of my favorite stories there is ambiguity as to whether the Flash from the future is a villain or hero. After all he is the actual Barry Allen.

There are some definite plot holes which is common in time travel stories. For instance, why would Barry Allen be so broken up over the death of Wally West, even 20 years later, since according to this timeline he barely knew the young boy? Also, if the future Flash fixes the speed force in the present he would never have a reason to go back which creates the obvious time loop. There is an attempt by the author to address this but simply sweeping it under the carpet doesn’t solve it. It also bothered me that the Flash is constantly having long conversations with villains even as he’s fighting them at super speed.

All in all I liked this volume. It has a nice Scooby Doo type mystery with a pretty good payoff. The pacing is very good and Venditti does a nice job of balancing the two main story arcs. I enjoyed the story enough that I read through it twice just to try and pick up things in the somewhat complex plot that I missed the first time. For instance the first time I read it I didn’t notice that there were actually TWO future flashes. I’m definitely interested in picking up future volumes even if the art really isn’t my cup of tea. I am new to the world of comics, so what I thought of this vol. and what you might think of this vol. will probably be different I was reading an e-copy of this and I couldn’t help, but notice how great the colors looked. I don’t know how that will translate to the paper, but I hope that it will look the same. It might seem a little silly to you, but the books I read have only words and it was nice to read something in color.
I started the comics because of the show, but I am staying in the story. Things might have started slow but after a while things got very interesting. The cliffhanger in the end makes me to want to read the next volume, which I guess is the reason it ends in that way. I will make sure to add this comic to my library.

This was an awesome story line! I felt a little confused here and there, like I should have read the justice league or something & not just flash volume 5 and then I would have understood better. I loved the cameo appearance

About the Author

Dan Chiras earned his Ph.D. in reproductive physiology in 1976 from the University of Kansas Medical School. After graduating, Dr. Chiras pursued interests in environmental science and has become a leading authority on environmental issues and sustainability. He is currently a Mellon Visiting Professor at Colorado College where he teaches courses on energy and the environment, renewable energy, ecological design, sustainable development, and sustainable systems design. He has published 20 books and nearly 250 articles in journals, magazines, newspapers, and encyclopedias. In the past eight years he has focused much of his attention on environmentally friendly building and has published several books on the subject including The Natural House: A Complete Guide to Healthy, Energy-Efficient, Environmental Homes; The Solar House: Passive Heating and Cooling; The New Ecological Home; and Superbia! 31 Ways to Create Sustainable Neighborhoods. Dr. Chiras also lectures widely on a variety of topics, including ways to build a sustainable society, green building, and renewable energy. In addition to his scientific and environmental pursuits, Dr. Chiras is a river runner, cross-country skier, bicyclist, organic gardener, and musician. He and his two sons live in a state-of-the-art environmental passive solar/solar electric home in Evergreen, Colorado, overlooking the snowcapped Rocky Mountains.

John Reganold received his Ph.D. in soil science from the University of California at Davis in 1980. He has worked as a soil scientist with the United States Department of Agriculture Natural Resource Conservation Service and as an environmental engineer for Utah International Inc., a worldwide mining company. As a professor of soil science at Washington State University since 1983, he teaches courses in introductory soils, land use, and organic farming and conducts research in land use and sustainable agriculture. He also advises undergraduate and graduate students in soil science and environmental science. His excellence in teaching and research has been recognized by several awards from Washington State University. Dr. Reganold has published more than 80 papers in scientific journals, magazines, and proceedings, such as Science, Nature, Scientific American, and New Scientist. His studies have received national and international attention from newspapers, magazines, radio, and television. He has given more than 100 invited presentations on his research to international, national, and regional groups of scientists, students, growers, and consumers from around the world. In addition to his research, he enjoys spending time outdoors, swimming, cycling, and backpacking.

Same format and content as the larger book with the polar bear on the cover!

This "international" version has exactly the same content as the larger book with the polar bear on the cover, but at a lower price. Of course, the page numbers are not the same as the larger book, but I found is super easy to find the content when my Professor quoted the text. It is smaller in size too, which makes it SO much easier to take in your backpack when the book is needed in class. Highly recommend this version!

Good intro to natural resource conservation

I used this text for a course on natural resource management. Overall, it's a good text with that hits on all the major areas of natural resource conservation, why it's important, what we are doing to the world, and ways to mitigate these impacts. It doesn't go into too much detail on any one area, but gives you enough info to understand the basic concepts to find resources that do provide more detail. My biggest complaint are the authors' use of advocacy language on certain topics, especially population and resource management in developing nations. They take a tone that clearly favors a certain way to handle certain environmental issues, instead of presenting mitigation techniques without bias. It made the book feel weaker, in my opinion.

Great Read (for a school text book)

I guess the title says it all 'Great Read (for a school text book)'

This was a book that was required for a class I took. I read it from cover to cover. I have to say - each chapter was well written and interesting. Each chapter addressed a different natural resource (for example air, freshwater, etc) including many I never considered (like top soil).

There is a newer edition out there. I contacted the publisher about an update. In hindsite I cannot believe that I, a simple minded student, would ask a publisher for an update! I guess that's just a testament to how interesting the book was, I was thinking perhaps maybe a pdf containing the 2 new chapters. The response I got was NO!

Now that the stink eye has been focused on the publisher, there was one point in the book that was a bit annoying. I did not like how the text kept refering to a picture or figure or graphic that almost always was on the next or the previous page turn. I guess that's the challange of the publisher and will always be a problem with the published medium.

OK ... so maybe I dont particularly care for the publishers, but it wont stop me from buying another book from them and this is still a great book.

The concept of four riding aspects is helpful when planning a ride or assessing a situation (mental focus, ride objectives, traffic and machine capabilities).

This book is my truth and personal history. I have recalled facts, from events to people, to the best of my ability. When memory failed me, I did not seek answers in imagination. I sought clarity through conversations with those who’ve shared experiences with me. When my recollection of events varied from theirs, I sided with my memory and used their voice, often direct quotes, to contextualize events.
Many people featured in the book gave me permission to use their names; others I changed or labeled with an initial to protect their privacy, whether they were guilty, innocent, indifferent, or somewhere in between.
As for terminology, I prefer to use trans over transgender or transsexual when identifying myself, although I don’t find either offensive.I do not use real or genetic or biological or natural to describe the sex,body, or gender of those who are not trans. Instead, I’ve used cis, aterm applied to those who are not trans and therefore less likely toexperience the misalignment of their gender identity and assigned sex at birth—a matter we do not control, yet one that continues to frame who is normalized or stigmatized.
Finally, though I highlight some of the shared experiences of trans women and women of color throughout this book, it was not written with the intent of representation. There is no universal women’s experience. We all have stories, and this is one personal narrative out of untold thousands, and I am aware of the privilege I hold in telling my story. A universal story about becoming who you were meant to be

Janet Mock weaves her personal history and the political landscape of trans livelihood in a way that is relatable and deeply intellectual in her powerful memoir. While you read, you hear her voice, feel her vulnerability and can't help but see yourself in her struggle - the universal struggle - of becoming the person you know you are meant to be. I read her words and felt hope, disappointment, pain, elation, dread and so many other emotions because you want her to succeed in LIFE & LOVE. Her resilience makes you stronger; it made me braver and a believer in one's self determination. Read this book!

If curious about Janet or what it means to be trans, this a good book to introduce you to the people behind the label

Consider this book almost like a 100 level course on what it means to be trans in the modern age. Now, be aware Janet's story isn't one which is all tears and fears followed by an eventual triumph. For while she did grow up in Hawaii and didn't have a middle-class family, it seems she was on the brink of poverty and never in the thick of it. With that said, though, you have your expected issues with parents who just don't understand, introductions to the community, discovering who you are, and Mock switching back and forth between educating you and speaking about her personal experiences. Thus giving you a book which feels well-rounded and while it may leave those curious about the process of transitioning unfulfilled, those who actually want to know the person and how they evolved into themselves, and not just about the procedure, are in for a good read.

Masterpiece!

"Redefining Realness" stirred up memories of my freshman year in college. During the spring semester, my English professor introduced the class to books by authors of subjects many of us had only heard of, but never even remotely experienced. Authors like E. Lynn Harris. His book "Just As I Am" sparked a fire in us that made us trample over other students hanging out in the quad, just to make it to the classroom in time to dissect the more than 380 pages of fictional sizzle. As we talked about the book and the issues it brought to the forefront, our discussions were filled with joy, anger, curiosity, and just a flat-out appreciation of Harris' writing skills.

This is how I felt while reading "Redefining Realness" - even before completing the first chapter. With my excitement level on "high", I wanted to immediately hightail it to someone's book club and talk about what I had just read!

This book is awesome. Janet Mock takes readers on the journey of her life as a trans woman of color - a journey that was as foreign to me as a map of the streets of Djibouti City. I honestly did not realize that the lives of transgender people were that intense (especially poor trans people of color). Thanks to media portrayals of trans men and women over the years, I likened them to "drag queens" and reduced their lives to simply being "people who like to play dress-up." To me, a person was either gay, lesbian, or straight. Nothing else. However, Mock's experience, passion, rawness, statistics, and transparency, taught me that the world does not fit neatly into compartments.

"Redefining Realness" evoked thought, compassion, and awareness - everything I expected based on the title of the book, as well as the publicity which has surrounded it over the last few months. I thoroughly enjoyed Mock's storytelling (story within a story), particularly the imagery she used to tell her story. Much like her "shero" Zora Neale Hurston, Mock's descriptive writing engaged all of the standard senses and more. I felt the winds and humidity of Oahu. I saw Charles, Sr.'s gold tooth with the Cowboys' shout-out. I touched Keisha's hair right along with Jamie. I heard conversations in Hawaiian pidgen on the streets as Janet and Wendi pooched. I tasted grandma's gumbo while eavesdropping on family gossip. (The pop music references sprinkled throughout the book made it even more "real" for me because I remember where I was when all of those songs debuted!)

On top of all of this, Mock made me laugh. Her quick wit provided a much-welcomed intermission from a stressful and, at times, unbelievable read. It was good to laugh to keep from crying. However, even in comedy, she managed to teach lessons. I'll never confuse a "drag queen" for a trans woman again because I now know "a drag queen is part-time for showtime. A trans woman is all the time." Love it!

"Redefining Realness" is a masterpiece, not only because of the content, but because of Mock's incredible writing skills. I appreciate her for using her unique story to inform, chastise, correct, and commend. That's what real women do.

I look forward to more work from Mock in any genre.
