Very very well written

For a non-textbook, this book is beautifully informative. I am a newcomer to the world of databases, and I found this book to be very explainative of the concepts of an object database and of the techniques used to implement one in C++. The author's prose style is professional, yet smooth, and his code is well written and well commented.
Note that almost half of the pages of this book are source code for the PARODY system.

Those expecting to find a good introduction to databases better look for another book. Al Stevens knows a lot about C++, but not about databases, especially relational databases. The explanation of the relational model is simply wrong. PARODY should be called PATODY, the Persistent Almost Tabular Data Storage System

There are two things preventing a higher rating.

1 The examples in the book and the current sample database from microsoft do not match. Microsoft has changed the structure of the Adventureworks database so some of the queries in the book no longer work. If you know SQL you can work around it.

2 The section concerning ordering views is wrong. Again, I assume Microsoft changed the way it worked after the book was published.

OK, but not great

This book was released just after SQL 2005 was released. So the author probably had to write much of it while SQLS 2005 was still in flux.

In a few cases, the information does not appear to match the final release, and the screen shots are hard to read (too small).

But for the most part, the book still has some value. It is a good introduction to sql server and, overall, an easy read.

This is a handbook developed by AMEDD (Army Medical Department) based on lessons learned during the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars. It is similar and complimentary to FM 21-11 and the Combat Lifesaver courses and reflects changes in tactical medical care. It begins with a summary of the types of injuries found on the modern battlefield as well as the causes of death in the immediate period after injury and over the middle and long term. The next section discusses care under fire and the next outlines care starting the ABCs and includes various procedures such as cricothroidotomy. I would use this book as my main textbook in teaching combat lifesavers supplemented with hands on training.

Highly recommended for the field medic

Excellent analysis of combat casualty care. I completed the 18D course in 90-91 and later completed medical school and served as a flight surgeon in a SF BN. The writers of the book provide updated information in regards to primary ATLS in the field.

It is interesting to see the lessons learned over the past 25 years. Highly recommended.

Caution: PPB not the Study Edition

This review pertains to the paperback edition from T&T Clark International. The buyer should know that this is not the Study Edition Church Dogmatics, Vol. 3.3, Sections 48-49: The Doctrine of Creation, Study Edition 17 which contains English translations of those passages Barth left untranslated in his original from T&T Clark. The Study Edition is also offered as a Continuum Reprint by T&T Clark; easy to confuse the two.

There is no question of Karl Barth's importance as the great Protestant theologian of the 20th Century; indeed there are only a few in earlier centuries (Augustine, Aquinas, Luther, Calvin) of a remotely similar stature. Whatever edition best suits the reader/purchaser, no theological library could be considered complete without the Church Dogmatics.

Great series of books on China

This is the second of a 5 book series that gives an inside out look at the evolution of China through the 1900's. I find the weaving of the authors life story and the events going on in China fascinating and would recommend the book highly. I've also read the first and third in the series and feel the same way. They may be a little hard to find but it's well worth the effort!!!

Great view of China in the 1930s

Autobiography is such a great way to understand history, and this is a great book for understanding more of what was happening in China in the 1930s and how it led up to the communist victory there after WWII. The book moves back and forth between Han's adolescence as a Chinese/Belgian child mainly in Peking, and later as a medical student and student activist in Belgium at the moment when Hitler was about to unleash total war in Europe. Lots in this book about the peace movement of that time and place and of the blindness of millions of Europeans to what was obviously about to happen. Lots Even more about the huge complexities of events in China, including how the United States was perfectly willing to let Japan begin its horrendous conquest of China and continued to fuel the Japanese war machine with steel and other basic materials with which it overran Manchuria and then the rest of China, and of course ultimately destroyed the US Navy at Pearl Harbor. Han tells her own story of familial and ethnic love/hate and he consuming desire to become a doctor with huge candor and amazing memory for details of events and her own changing psychological states. This is truly a revealing book.
