About the Author

Conrad Barski has an M.D. from the University of Miami, and nearly 20 years of programming experience. This includes a stint developing an obscure Atari Jaguar game, and working on many medical software projects. Barski is also an avid cartoonist, having created the popular alien Lisp mascot and many graphical tutorials. He currently develops cardiology software and lives in Washington, D.C.

Eating parentheses for breakfast is delicious... and fun!

If for no other reason, you should buy Land of Lisp because of the extreme levels of unadulterated nerdery filling its pages. The price of the book is almost worth that very spectacle alone. However, as an added bonus the content of the book is top drawer. The first incarnation of Lisp was discovered by John McCarthy over 50 years ago, so it's difficult to imagine that a book on the subject bringing a fresh perspective, but Land of Lisp pulls it off in spades. The book manages to carve its own unique niche in the Lisp book landscape through a masterful blend of cartoons, game development examples, interesting prose, and a highly sharpened whit.

The author, Conrad Barski M.D., takes the reader through a whirlwind tour of Common Lisp and some of the fundamental principles of game development, but interestingly enough it never feels rushed. He accomplishes this feat by sticking to a very important strategy summarized as, "providing something useful at every stage". That is, every example in the book is meant to fit into the context of the larger game examples (e.g. a text adventure, Dice of Doom, etc.) while simultaneously teaching a lesson about Common Lisp *and* provide utility in isolation. It's really a thing of beauty the way that Mr. Barski manages to build useable games piecemeal while teaching important concepts along the way. To illustrate what I mean, let me give an example. The Dice of Doom game example starts with a very small 2x2 board and the program parts needed to represent it. Mr. Barski then builds pieces on top of this substrate to generate positions, while extolling the virtues of decoupling the logic of the game from its representation. It's at this point that the game is playable against a human opponent, but at no previous stage was the code left in a state of flux -- each one was fully amenable to tinkering, tweaking, and experimentation. As an added bonus, the whole implementation by this stage was an incredible 13 lines! (that is actually not true, it's more than that, but by using Common Lisp the implementation was incredibly concise) As if this feat was not impressive enough, Mr. Barski then adds game AI into the mix while explaining the famous minimax search algorithm. He then makes the game more efficient using some techniques common in functional programming, including: closures, memoization, tail-calls (with caveats), and lazy programming. As expected the game itself becomes more feature rich as these lessons progress as stronger AI (i.e. better evaluation) is added, more efficient search techniques are introduced (i.e. alpha-beta pruning), and heuristics are used.

All in all, I am very impressed with the quality of Land of Lisp. As a co-author of a Lisp programming book I appreciate the amount of effort required to pull off a genuinely unique book -- I would be happy to achieve a fraction of the quality of Land of Lisp. This book will appeal to the long-time Lisper and the neophyte and I highly recommend buying it today.

Extreme Fun Learning A Classic & Powerful Programming Language

Not since the long out of print "A Fortran Coloring Book" by Roger Kaufman and MIT Press has there been a programming language textbook that was this much fun :-) Lisp is a powerful, self-extensible language; it is the second oldest programming language in continuous use; its implementation was based on a 1958 mathematical paper by John McCarthy on the Lambda Calculus. It also for many years was the main language taught in MIT's basic course for Computer Science 6.001 the "Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs".

While this book would be worth purchasing for the Nerdly Jokes and Comics by themselves, it is a full but easily paced treatment of a language that allowed the implementation of most Artificial Intelligence research. The easy, carefully designed pedagogy (teaching) follows the development of several entertaining and challenging games including 1980's style text adventures (like Zork and Adventure). But advanced topics are covered in some level of depth with examples including development of a HTTP server, a full chapter on Functional Programming, and another on LISP Macro's and the development of Domain-Specific Languages (DSL's). Some Artificial Intelligence methods such as MINIMAX are briefly covered in the game examples developed in this book. Reader's seeking some understanding of Functional Programing will achieve this understanding in a widely used and classic programming language rather than the more recent and arcane Haskell.

This is a fun and relatively easy ride through one of the oldest higher-level programming languages and one with considerable life still in it. It could form the basis of a child's early programming background or a comprehensive adult's introduction to a powerful Computer Science tool. It is the interesting project of an MD's interestingly twisted obsession and valuable to anyone interested in techniques of programming. A great read...

Good book but moves quickly

As a person who doesn't know Lisp, I bought this book hoping it would be a good place to start learning, but I feel like a person should have some familiarity with Lisp before reading this. I'm 6 chapters in and the pacing seems weird. I flew through the first 3 or 4 chapters but around chapters 4 or 5 new concpets started getting introduced really quickly. Also, I wish there was more emphasis on where were going with the game when coding it. I feel a little lost while I'm writing the code. I've concluded that the best way to go through this book for me is to read each chapter, then read it again while working through the code. I guess I just need a little more hand holding then this book provides. It is funny, I love the cartoons and I think if someone had a little familiarity with Lisp it would be a great book for them. I'd also like to see programming challenges at the end of each chapter to help reinforce what was learned. At the end of the day this book isn't bad but I'd start with The Little Schemer (which I'm reading now and is awesome), then move onto one of the free Lisp books online, then read this.

Not worth the money but OK

Let me start by saying, I have a lot of experience in academia with instructional texts both as a student and as an instructor (chemistry). Have been working with computers since 1994 on a personal level and did some OS upgrades, networking and installing software, etc. A basic techie with just enough knowledge to never have had to contact any other techs to fix my personal computers. I am used to instructional texts being very well written and smoothly transitioning within paragraphs and from topic to topic and clearly defining the material. This instructional text will do what it needs to do but it is not an easy read overall. The subject matter within this book is not explained clearly. The 8P8C comment about it being the same thing an RJ45 is wrong and that is right at the very beginning. That alone made me apprehensive about going further. The don't even tell you what 8P8C means within the chapter. It is things like this that are left out that leave you scrambling to go find the real information. Several other acronyms are not defined when first introduced either. Leaving some things out because they are not necessary for taking the test does not give a good overall education and that is what someone just starting out needs.

The most disappointing part is that Wiley does not support the text at all with any kind of practice tests or even answers to the end of chapter questions within the book or online. Not any answers at all. Their online student support for this book is a pdf with a list of topics on the test that are covered by the chapter. I was disappointed in that since this is a serious test that results in a certification and it costs $115 each time you take the test, if you do not pass the first time. You would expect some answers to the questions with thorough explanations. I contacted Wiley to ask about getting access to even the odd numbered questions and they said they do not give that information out except to instructors. I felt the 2nd Chapter on OSI was weak. It was not clear at all.

IF you are taking the Microsoft Virtual Academy Networking Fundamentals class online, you definitely want to purchase some kind of study guide. This one is definitely NOT worth $68 or the $80+ they try to charge. Maybe $30. Still, you will need some kind of text to help you prepare. Do not try to take the test just from watching the Microsoft videos. The book does go into greater depth. I have an additional supplemental book to help explain the subject matter.

There are two positives. Within the chapters are activities for your computer(s) to help reinforce the material. Also, there is a free practice test via GMetrix but it isn't from Wiley. Not sure if the code works for the test though. They do put it right on the page of the book.

Overall, the book does give you information but it is not well presented. A student IS responsible for their own education yet they do need to get clear instructions so they can advance their knowledge. I cannot figure out whether the writers were trying to be deliberately vague to try to keep people from wanting to do IT because it increases their competition or it just wasn't reviewed by anyone who really understands educational philosophy and knows how to write instructional texts. While reviewing this text, I am also reading from a different one I ordered at the same time by Darril Gibson that is also specifically for educating you to take the 98-366 exam. So far it is far easier to understand and is far more clear in the descriptions of the subject matter. I am not affiliated with either publisher or author in any way.

*** Buyer alert *** Unfortunately I purchased this book without seeing the one review that gave the book a 1-star rating and who's comments were accurate. This book is touted as a book for a Microsoft Learning Course, however each chapter has a Knowledge Assessment with multiple questions and NO ANSWERS. After checking the publishers website to try and find a way to get help provide the answers I finally received a response from a sales department that stated "I would suggest contacting a local college to see if they are using your particular book in a classroom to see about checking your work."

Keret, an Israeli writer who also writes children's books and collaborates with illustrators on graphic stories and novels, specializes in brainteasing short short stories reminiscent of the "Shouts and Murmurs" section of the New Yorker—30 are packed in this thin volume. A typical Keret situation is enacted in "Your Man": the narrator finds that his girlfriends inexplicably break up with him in the back of taxicabs while the radio always announces a caller from a certain address. He goes to the address, finds photos of his exes tacked to the wall and erupts in violence, with repercussions that give new meaning to masochism. Dogs play a role in Keret's stories similar to the sly role they assume in Thurber cartoons, hovering between the fantastic and the everyday, and sex is an obsession ("Actually, I've Had Some Phenomenal Hardons Lately" is one story's title.) In "Fatso," a man's girlfriend confides a secret: she turns into a rotund male at night. Like French surrealist Marcel Aym�, Keret keeps his stories one dimensional, but it's a dimension he has mastered, one that peels away the borderlines of normalcy. (Apr.)

Once you know that Keret's work has been featured on NPR's This American Life and Selected Shorts, it becomes hard to think of these 30 pieces as short stories. The adenoidal 35--going-on-13 tones of the former program's host grate in the mind like the voices of Woody Allen, Shelley Berman, and other ur-stand-ups, and the veil is parted. These aren't stories, they're routines! They're mostly told in the third person by the same kind of guys (once, gal) as the protagonists: schlemiels, though the singles among them are also slackers.^B They're modern young Israelis fixated on sex, unable to make lasting connections, frustrated to quiet madness, and feckless as . . . a stand-up's persona. Most of their stories are could-be realistic, a few are ultimately sentimental, and the best are arguably the fantasies, such as the volume opener, whose protagonist has a girlfriend ("the sex is dynamite") who becomes a fat, hairy, party-animal guy at night, and is still as much fun to be with. The stories are very funny, but they start to get a little overwhelming when I read several of them in a row; the quirkiness can be a bit much all at once.

When he's good, he's good . . .

There are many fantastic short stories in this collection, _The Nimrod Flipout_, by Israeli author Etgar Keret. There are also many that are reminiscent of first drafts from a night-school creative writing class. When he's good, Keret is a fantastic new talent, full of humor and existential angst, but when he's not - he's trite, cliche, and boring - one more young guy writing about getting stoned and laid.

The titular story "The Nimrod Flipout", is one of the best in the entire collection. Three young men are possessed, in turn, by the spirit of their friend, Nimrod, who killed himself after his girlfriend broke up with him. [Variety is also not Keret's strong suit. There are at least two other stories where someone kills themselves because they've been dumped.] After the narrator, the last to succumb to the spirit of his deceased friend, the possession repeats itself starting over again with Miron, the first to be possessed. It's a touching story about the frivolity of youth, and deeply tragic, as well; its also one of the funniest stories in the collection.

"Fatso", the opening story, I also loved. It is about a guy whose girlfriend turns into a fat, drunk, soccer-loving man after the sun goes down, and how, after spending many nights going out and watching soccer at the bar with this character, he begins to love his girlfriend, too.

This collection has its shining moments, and is highly recommended to fans of short fiction. However, don't be surprised if some of the stories dissapoint.

Some of these stories are brilliant, first round knockouts. Others are shtick-yawns. The best are like the wondrous short-short stories of Spencer Holst. The worst are whines from the slacker you'd never listen to for five minutes if you bumped into them at a bar. Buy the book for the wonderful, but expect a very mixed bag.

About the Author
IRMA KAYE SAWYER HAS been an intuitive her entire life, and began giving intuitive readings at age 12. In the early 90′s she had an experience where she began the spontaneous channeling of the Arch Angelic Energy Collective, who were her Guides until 2007, when at that time she connected with the Akashic Wisdom Keepers (or simply The Keepers), during her Akashic Record consultant training.

She has been in the Holistic Healing and Intuitive Consulting field professionally since 1992, and has training and certifications in Usui and other forms of Reiki, Magnified Healing, Shamanic Healing, Intuitive Counseling and Akashic Record Consulting.

Irma is the author of THE AQUARIAN EMPATH, THE AQUARIAN PATH TO ABUNDANCE, and COSMIC LOVE: KEYS FOR THE PATH OF LIGHT, all published by Starfield Press. She is currently at work on her upcoming title THE AQUARIAN HEALER.

Essential for Empaths and Spiritual Seekers

Timely, brilliant, inspiring. Irma does a beautiful job of sharing important knowledge about what it means to be an Empath and how to manage these gifts effectively. A great book to have for yourself, and to recommend to clients if you're in a healing profession. Thank you for writing and passing on your wisdom!

Accessible, Practical Guide for Sensitive People

If you are a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) and have suffered angst and illnesses more than the average -this is a quick, short, compassionate book to get. I read it in one sitting. The author is spot on about how to take care of yourself energetically and physically (and more). Reading it is like sitting with a kind friend who knows what it's like to be an Empath or HSP, and she offers extra wisdom from guides in the Spirit realm, which is icing on the cake. (I read the book version.)

William Heard Kilpatrick (1871-1965) was, during his long career, the chief interpreter and disseminator of John Dewey's educational thought. Known as �Columbia's Million-Dollar Professor� because of the great popularity (and revenue) of his classes at Teachers College, Kilpatrick vigorously promoted the progressive educational message that schools must be more child-centered, democratic, and socially oriented. This transplanted native of Georgia was the center of controversy over several decades. As a young man he underwent a heresy trial in the South for his unconventional theological beliefs. During the Great Depression he came under attack by conservatives for his active leadership in the radical Social Reconstructionist movement. And near the end of his life, he was assailed by McCarthyites for his social views and challenges to the traditional curriculum. Since his death, critics have accused Kilpatrick's legacy of departing from Dewey's message and encouraging anti-intellectualism by classroom practitioners. Kilpatrick is one of the major figures in twentieth-century American education and his ideas continue to frame the debate on educational reform as we enter the twenty-first century.

About the Author
The Author: John A. Beineke has been a public school teacher, university professor and administrator, and foundation program director. He received his doctorate from Ball State University (Indiana) in social science education and American history. In addition to biographical portraits published in articles and chapters, he has also written on educational history, practice, and policy. Beineke is currently associate director of the Kellogg National Leadership Program at the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. He has three children and lives with his wife Debbie in Battle Creek, Michigan.
