Very good reprint of a very important "lost" work. My qualification to speak: I have owned the original since that time, all those years ago! The rise of electronic calculators in the early 1970s signaled the obsolescence of solution of difficult arithmetical problems by the use of look-up tables, which had been the practice for about 3 1/2 centuries after Napier first published his logarithms in 1614. The 1981 edition of the "Bowditch" tables was the last to publish tables of logarithms, trigonometric functions, logarithms of trigonometric functions, and a sight reduction system based on them, the Ageton method. Even in 1981 this would have been considered archaic, but it was somehow comforting to believe that humans could realistically work their way through quite a stack of difficult computations with no more than a sheaf of paper, a pencil, a book of tables , and their own engaged minds.
"Bowditch" , as it informally known, has been the cherished Epitome of Navigation since its first publication in 1802. Published by the US Government, hence free from copyright protection, this particular printing of "Bowditch" Volume 2 is presented by Paradise Cay Publications. The hardcover binding is of sound quality, and Paradise Cay has commendably included a page of errata to correct the original 1981 Defense Mapping Agency version. I detract one "star" from a perfect rating because the page size of this Paradise Cay printing is a few centimetres each dimension smaller than the 1981 Government printing. The visual compression noticably distorts some of the diagrams and typography; nonetheless, it is legible. In the accompanying photo, you see the yellowing yet larger pages of my original printing compared with the new version of Table 32 Logarithms of Numbers
The small quibble about the smaller page size absolutely does not diminish my delight that someone has seen fit to preserve this important work. If you are an older gentleman such as myself, who did learn things that way "way back then", I definitely recommend this volume to you!
