About the Author
MARIE DUNFORD, Ph.D., R.D., has been involved in sports nutrition since the mid-1980s. In 1985, while a faculty member at California State University, Fresno, she created the curriculum for an upper-division course entitled "Nutrition and the Athlete." She taught the course for a total of 16 years, during which time she interacted with thousands of student athletes. This direct exposure to nutrition and exercise science majors and NCAA Division I athletes helped her to develop an understanding of how students learn and the sports nutrition topics that are the most difficult for students to master. In addition to this textbook, Dr. Dunford has written three other books and numerous online sports nutrition courses for nutrition and exercise professionals. She is an active member of SCAN--the Sports, Cardiovascular, and Wellness Nutritionists--a dietetic practice group of the American Dietetic Association, and a member of the American College of Sports Medicine. She is an avid recreational tennis player and a struggling student of French.
J. ANDREW DOYLE, Ph.D., FACSM, is an Associate Professor of Exercise Physiology and the Director of the Applied Physiology Laboratory in the Department of Kinesiology and Health at Georgia State University, where he formerly served as the Department Chair. He received a B.S. in Zoology from Clemson University, an M.S. in Exercise Science from Georgia State University, and his doctorate in Exercise Physiology from the Ohio State University. He has taught exercise physiology, exercise testing and fitness assessment, and exercise programming at the undergraduate and graduate level for over 20 years. His research interests include carbohydrate metabolism and exercise and the role of physical activity, exercise, and fitness in health. He has conducted, published, and presented numerous research studies with cyclists, runners, and triathletes, and has extensive experience testing elite athletes from cycling, running, gymnastics, rowing, canoe and kayak, and basketball. Dr. Doyle is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine.

My favorite CSSD study reference (Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics)
By Lacey
I am a registered dietitian and work with a very active military population. I used the Kindle version of Dunford's Nutrition for Sports and Exercise on my iPad, iMac and iPhone to prepare for the CSSD exam, and it was my favorite and most used reference material for the Board Exam. I chose the Kindle version for a few key reasons:
1. I live overseas and it was faster. When you are a working person with limited time to study, waiting a few weeks for a paperback to get delivered isn't very reasonable.
2. It was cheaper. Yep. Money.
3. I can take my iPad and iPhone pretty much anywhere. If a meeting doesn't start on time or I am stuck on a train or something for a few hours, I don't have to lug an entire 600+ page textbook to sneak in those extra minutes (sometimes hours) of study time. Much better than I did in college, which involved destroying the spine of really expensive text books so I could study on-the-go while studying abroad!
4. I am lazy and reading is not my best learning style -- there are some "cheats" you can do to get your Mac to read a textbook to you while you follow along. The Kindle version of this book considers highlighting to have the book read to you "copying," so you'll only make it through about chapter 2-3 doing that. However, if you highlight a section then click "Google" you can have the section of text copied to a Google search window and click Option+Escape (Google "How to make your Mac read to you" if you aren't familiar with this).
5. This book allows you to make highlights and notes, search the text and create your own flashcards along the way while you are read. There is also a handy function that lets you make flashcards from the vocabulary words, which I loved.
6. Being able to search the entire text for a certain word or phrase is heaven.
As far as content, it is thorough, which some people will get annoyed with. There is actually information/reference to WHY about things, which I feel helps to enhance understanding. There are also examples of specific athletes, so there is some application. The questions at the end of the chapters are not a good reflection of what will be on the CSSD examination, I recommend Michelle Rockwell's SPORTS DIETETICS: Practiced, Proven & Tested CSSD Preparation Tool which also has good quick references for common calculations. I also used Sports Nutrition: A Practice Manual for Professionals for a quick overview, but it is more of a reference material for dietitians than a teaching tool -- the layout is significantly lacking and the military nutrition part is incredibly too brief. The Academy's position papers recommended for review on the CDR/SCAN website are also pretty essential and easy reads.
Overall a great book and resource -- an in depth look for those new to sports nutrition, and a good review material for those of us who practice it every day but need a refresher. This book convinced me I need to buy a real kindle instead of using my iPad.

Took a Sports Nutrition class last semester online and though we still had a lot of power points, I used the book ALOT! I rented this, and it was very useful. I am kind of bummed that I only rented it, but I simply could not afford the expensive price tag on this bad boy. It was very useful and something I can use even after my class is over and apply it towards my major as well. I learned a lot from this book! Did not disappoint. If your a Nutrition major, adult exercise science/ exercise science major or really anything to do with this, I would invest in this book and buy it!

This book was selected for a sports nutrition class, and honestly, it's filled with TONS of extra fluff, and then some great information, but you almost have to be really discerning to find exact answers for nutritional requirements. It seems like they could have left 2/3 of the book out, and you would be just fine with what would be left.
