Well told tales

Nursery tales are known pretty well to those of us on Medicare. We know the story, it's the telling that makes the difference.

These are told with the right combination of suspense, danger, compassion, humor and surprise.

They are fun to read and memorable.

Another favorite Richard Scarry "big book" for us

Another favorite Richard Scarry "big book" for us. We love the Busytown series, and all of our children, from the six year old down to the seven month old, love this one. We were familiar with most of the stories (ie, Little Red Riding Hood, The Three Bears, and the Billy Goats Gruff), but the Teeny Tiny Woman, which was a new one for us, has especially been a hit. I think it was meant to be kind of a "scary" story, and ended up making us all laugh in the end.

Can't go wrong with Richard Scarry!

The book is a careful study of how to make and maintain pits where harzardous waste is stored. There are detailed descriptions of what soils are appropriate to dig in, and how to make compacted clay liners. Clay soils are desirable because they can retain moisture and other related seepage from the waste.

Another method is to use a geomembrane, which is made from a parent resin and other ingredients. Various formulations have been used for over 30 years. The cost can be an issue compared to a traditional clay liner.

For all the methods, there are also explanations of how to test the containment. For the geomembrane, this can involve destructive testing on the fabricated seams. But nondestructive tests are also possible.

Cover systems are detailed in one chapter. These are needed to prevent snowmelt or rain falling on the area with the waste, and accruing some of the waste, which can then travel away via runoff. So the waste region is covered with some material.

About the Author
Gerard Taylor is a writer living and working in the city of Oslo in Norway. He began training in capoeira in the 1980s and later received the grade Capoeira Instructor by Mestre Sombra of Associação Senzala de Santos and Mestre Sylvia Bazzarelli of the London School of Capoeira, recognized by the Brazilian Capoeira Confederation.In 1996 the author received his "formado" graduation from Mestre Sylvia Bazzarelli and Contra Mestre Marcos Aurelio Dos Santos of the London School of Capoeira. Later that year he established the Oslo Capoeira Klubb with another "formada" of the London School, Agnes Folkestad. Over the course of the next decade Taylor has trained many hundreds of students. In 2006, the Oslo Capoeira Klubb graduated formados of its own, some of whom demonstrate the movements in Capoeira 100.Since the late 1970s Taylor has worked in various fields of journalism and copywriting, including the Foundation for African Arts, and the Black Voice Newspaper. He has also contributed articles to Agogô Magazine and Brazzil Magazine. Taylor is the author of two previous works on capoeira: "Capoeira: The Jogo de Angola from Luanda to Cyberspace, Volume 1," a comprehensive history of pre-20th century capoeira, published by North Atlantic Books in 2005; and "Capoeira Conditioning," a whole-body training program using exercises from capoeira, published by Blue Snake Books in 2006.Anders Kjaergaard is a professional photographer living and working in London. In addition to shooting all the photographs in Capoeira 100, he illustrated Taylor's two previous books. With Sue Parkhill, Kjaergaard is presently completing work for volume two of "Capoeira: The Jogo de Angola from Luanda to Cyberspace," which will be published in early 2007.Kjaergaard and Parkhill are both graduates of the Royal College of Art where they studied photography on the MA program. They both continue to show their own work internationally as well as collaborating on projects such as this one.

Excellent Material

This is a great book. It not only contains the basic movements of the art but also some of the more advanced ones. Some of the moves especially the most difficult and acrobatic ones not always have a clear description or suggestion as to how you can work up to them progressively, so please be cautious when trying to practice a move that you are not comfortable with and always try to train in a softer surface or gymnastic mat until you get stronger, coordinated, flexible and faster. Be sure to first work and improve in the more basic movements which will provide you with a strong foundation and body awareness. If you happen to have a capoeira group available in your area go check them out and use this book as a reference for your home or solo training. The book also contains partner drills, fitness exercises and technique applications. The photos are very clear, with steps and written instructions. If you can already perform a handstand or wall handstand, a back bridge, a cartwheel and a full range squat, you will be able to perform most of the basic moves and sequences.

Great detail, but difficult to apply techniques

This book has excellent detail and explanations, but it would still be difficult, and potentially hazardous to try an apply these techniques without the proper in-person guidance from an inspector. Still, it is probably the best book on the market. Overall, a GREAT book to supplement you if you are currently enrolled in a class.

-Excellent photographs (clear angles and pixellation)
-Detailed explanation
-Variety of techniques
-Well-oranized content

CONS:
-lack of mitigation for poor techniques
-slightly less beneficial than a youtube video
-significantly less valuable than an actual capoeira class

Delivery condition

I have almost completed the reading of Volume I, and the arrival of this volume is good news. Volume I has been extraordinary. Like A History of Civilizations by Braudel, this book goes well beyond most historical writings.

As to the physical copy delivered, it was in pretty good shape, but with some stains, making me doubt the "NEW" description on the website.
