Taking it up a Notch

I would first like to say thank you to the author for making this available. The content is full of good starting points for any good class and instruction. It is designed to be used by those who have accomplished good working skills and a well rounded background in Bushcraft. I think it is the idea and goal of the author to set a more rigid set of principals that need to be taught by any and all who wish to teach and pass on Bush knowledge. This is my own feelings as well. I hope those who are interested will find this just as useful as I do!

Good book but if you want detail

Good book but if you want detail, look into his other books. This is just want it claims to be... A course syllabus for the experienced instructor. Lots of organization for a course and points to all of the needed key concepts but the detail is expected to be in the mind of the instructor or found in some of his other resources. This is a great companion book to go with his other books.

I would call this more of an article than a book. It highlights in great detail the syllabus of what to learn to be a wilderness bush instructor. One need to get all of his books to truly understand his syllabus.

About the Author

Giovannino Guareschi, known as Giovanni to his millions of English language readers, was born at Fontanelle in the Valley of the Po on the 1st of May, 1908. His father wanted him to become a naval engineer. Later he founded his own magazine, 'Candido', and wrote 347 stories featuring Don Camillo, a character who has done for Italy what Cervantes Don Quixote did for Spain.

Don Camillo's Little World is Magical

I fell in love with both the priest Don Camillo and his faithful adversary, Peppone the Communist mayor, when I was only ten, and since then have read all of the books, several times. After my experiences of being in the USAF in Taiwan in the 1970s, and now a permanent resident in mainland China's Fujian Province, I can appreciate the kinds of clashes that can occur between Communists and Christians--serious, but at times quite humorous also. I appreciate the zany humor but most of all the down to earth warm portrayels of both Don Camillo and Peppone. The author shows good and bad sides of both, and Don Camillo's conversations with Christ, who speaks to him from the crucifix above the altar, are priceless. After a few stories, one realizes that neither Don Camillo nor Peppone are the good guy or the bad guy, but simple ordinary people--and though enemies, they each sometimes go out of their way to help the other (though secretly, to save face). The cast of supporting characters, like skinny Smilzo, is also a delight.
The line drawings of the angel Don Camillo and the devil Peppone are, of course, priceless. Simple and to the point, they are the icing on the Don Camillo cake, and probably the reason why I draw cartoons on everything from greeting cards to my books on China--Amoy Magic, Fujian Adventure, Mystic Quanzhou, deng deng (which is Chinese for "etcetera"). I highly recommend not only Little World but all of the Don Camillo books in print.

Humorous lessons in tolerance

I first read Don Camilo when I was 13. The thing that I have always liked the most about this book is its central lesson: it is possible to fight about ideologies, but when the community is in danger, we must forget the fight and help our neighbors. We'll continue the fuss later. Episode after episode, Don Camilo, the local priest, and Peppone, the communist mayor, confront each other, sometimes in a serious and violent way. But every time, both men negotiate their way out of trouble. That is a related lesson: public enemies / private friends. When you finish the book, indeed, you get a feeling that these two enemies and rivals have developed, over the years and innumerable shared experiences, a friendship that is deeper than most people's relationships. I like very much the parts when, in the midst of a crisis, Peppone and Don Camilo run secret negotiations in the middle of the night. But if you think this is a "rosy" book, full of childish situations, you are wrong. The problems that both characters have to solve are often deep and painful. This is the best kind of educational book, because it does not really have a "moral". The intelligent reader -and most children are- gets his own conclusions in a funny and humorous way. Those are the lessons likely to stay for life. A lovely book.

Horrible KINDLE translation - none of the original charm

KINDLE: I have checked back repeatedly for Don Camillo on Kindle. Same art work but a *different* translator from my "hardback" Don Camillo book. This translation is DREADFUL - it has none of the grace & charm of the original.
Ghastly.

I'm hate the recent "PC" style of translation (see my review of Genji).

After WWII the existing railway companies were all put into the control of the newly formed British Transport Commission and that government organization spawned British Railways, which came into being on 1st January 1948. The railway infrastructure had suffered badly during the war years and most of the steam locomotives were 'tired' and badly maintained and or life expired. Although the management of British Railways was already planning to replace steam power with diesel and electric engines/units they still took a decision to build more steam locomotives (as a stop gap).

Some 999 (yes just 1 short) Standard locomotives were built in 12 classes ranging from super powerful express and freight engine to suburban tank locomotives. The locomotives were mainly in good order when the order came in 1968 to end steam, some only 8 years old.

There still exists a fleet of 46 preserved Standards of which 75% are in working order in and around the UKs preserved railways, furthermore 3 new build standard locomotives are proposed. Steam fans who were around in the 1960s all remember the 'Standards'.

Here Keith Langston Presents a 'potted history' of the different British Railways Standard classes, plus the Riddles 'Dub Deed', Providing a welcome reference work for those looking for an up-to-date picture. For what this book does succinctly is to show both the BD scene and the post-preservation era. Many reference books will give chapter and verse on the BR days and then just inform us weather a locomotive has been preserved or scrapped. For some locomotives there is - fortunately - more of a story to be told. After examining the work of Riddles and the Standard Design Group, a chapter is allocated to each class. In the case of the 'Britannias' and 'Clans', details and at least one photograph of each class member are included. There are a good number of illustrations throughout in black & white and colour with the quality ranging form average to excellent.- Steam Railway Magazine

The title is misleading. The book lacking in necessary information. Don't buy it.

If you are a beginning or novice saxophonist this book provides some very basic, helpful information on the selection of mouthpieces, reed care, and the care and upkeep of your saxophone. And in that case it would be a good book to buy.

But honestly, anyone who needs a more in depth explanation of how mouthpieces function and what makes them sound the way they do should NOT buy this book. The title, for a start, is misleading. It should be something more like "Equipment Selection and Basic Maintenance of Your Saxophone." There is actually very little reliable information about what makes a saxophone mouthpiece sound the way it does in this book. Aside from a helpful chart that compares tip opening measurements, there is no other valuable resource for selecting a mouthpiece present in this book.

This lack of information is irresponsible. The author disregards all of the other factors that play a role in mouthpiece sound production: mouthpiece material, chamber size, rail widths, baffle angle, and angled sidewalls. Chamber size in particular has been a subject of debate ever since Sigurd Rascher complained in the 1930s about new mouthpieces with smaller chamber sizes different from Adophe Sax's original design. He claimed they limited the intensity of the overtone spectrum in a saxophone's sound. Dennis Guillaume did research in 1969 that concluded the opposite: that smaller chambers heightened the presence and intensity of overtones in a saxophone's sound. These are observations that you can't afford to ignore when you write a book titled "Saxophone Mouthpiece Selection" and yet Robert Scarff did. If Scarff believes that these things aren't a significant factor in the sound production of a saxophone, he should at least give a good explanation why.

I wish someone would write a real book about this subject, because I haven't been able to find one yet.

Very very well written

For a non-textbook, this book is beautifully informative. I am a newcomer to the world of databases, and I found this book to be very explainative of the concepts of an object database and of the techniques used to implement one in C++. The author's prose style is professional, yet smooth, and his code is well written and well commented.
Note that almost half of the pages of this book are source code for the PARODY system.

Those expecting to find a good introduction to databases better look for another book. Al Stevens knows a lot about C++, but not about databases, especially relational databases. The explanation of the relational model is simply wrong. PARODY should be called PATODY, the Persistent Almost Tabular Data Storage System
