DALE DAUTEN

As founder of The Innovators’ Lab�, an organization devoted to developing and testing new ideas in management and marketing, Dale has done idea generation with dozens of organizations, including Honeywell, General Dynamics, Caterpillar, and NASA.

His consulting work includes educational programs for Certified Innovation Mentors, and his work on creating a culture of innovation yielded a patent-pending new advance on brainstorming called BrainTouring™.

Dale has been researching achievers since his student days at Arizona State and Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business. His early work prompted a government publication to call him a “guru” to White House staffers, and since then, his books have developed a following worldwide, especially in Japan.

Resign from Club Mediocre

As a manager, are you getting the best performance from your employees? That's the challenge from Dauten and O'Donnell in Mandatory Greatness, a book that's well worth reading by seasoned leaders as well as new managers. The conversational format makes it a fun fast read--very accessible to busy professionals. People will easily relate the stories to their own experience. And the debate between the characters keeps it controversial enough to pull the reader along to the final chapter!

This is more than a book; it's a parable!

I really enjoyed and benefitted from Mandatory Greatness.

Wikipedia defines a parable as follows:

A parable is [1] a succinct story, in prose or verse, which illustrates one or more instructive principles, or lessons, or (sometimes) a normative principle.

Normative is further defined as:

Normative has specialized contextual meanings in several academic disciplines. Generically, it means relating to an ideal standard or model.[1] In practice, it has strong connotations of relating to a typical standard or model (see also normality).

Mandatory Greatness is more than a business book or a story. In my opinion, it's a parable. I've read many business books in my life and most will facilitate success if the reader applies the wisdom shared and the knowledge gained. Unfortunately, too many reading experiences end up on the bottom shelf and not on the bottom line.

J. T. and Dale offer a fun and simultaneously very practical insight into the reality of business and life. The book is an easy and entertaining read. The 12 steps (The 12 Law of Driving Exceptional Performance) provide a one page "To Do" list on leadership and management. I believe these should be a standard.

The simple description of "management types" (The Smart Ass, The Kiss Ass, The Hard Ass), caught my eye and when I pondered what I read, faces from my past appeared on the page. (See what I mean? You haven't read the book yet I bet you've personalized these descriptions.)

I've already added one bit of wisdom from this book to a presentation I'm making to the HOBY leadership program on Saturday night. To me it makes understandable the challenges facing business as we try to assimilate tomorrow (Gen Y) into today.

"However, you don't become special by doing ordinary things and having everyone tell you how terrific you are. All parents applaud when the toddler uses the potty, calling in the other parent to look at the little poop. But if you're still applauding when the kid is 25, something is wrong. And not with the kid."

Parents, managers and leaders need to rethink their roles and expectations. They need to get real. This book helps with that process.

Great examination of leadership

This was a very enjoyable and thought provoking read. The breezy format sucks you in, but Dauten and O'Donnell hide pearls of wisdom around many corners. The 12 laws range from eye opening in some cases to subtle codifications of what you may already know. I certainly believe that there is something in this book to be learned or affirmed by professionals at every career level - if you're just starting out, it's a blueprint for success and a lot to consider as you move forward; if you're a "seasoned" professional managing a team (the target of the book, really), the discussion forces a reexamination of many elements of personnel oversight. Really good stuff.

Yes, even though it was very cheap I returned a Kindle book

I have purchased many physical and electronic books on Amazon. I don't think I ever returned a physical book before though maybe I should have. Information on Android with Firebase are a little rare, especially the new version I learned about at Google IO 2016. If you surf around you can find some examples but usually most are in Javascript. When I read the sample of this book it didn't tell me anything only a couple of pages. Given the price I purchased the Kindle edition. This 'book' is little more than 60 points and paragraphs on what you need to do. There is not a single code sample or screen capture. The book is so brief I had to check I wasn't just reading the contents. You can learn much more at Firebase.com, or the Firecasts channels on youtube. I returned this purchase after only a few minutes. Having thought about it a little, I felt compelled to write this review.

This is an excellent book. I am a huge fan of income producing products and I've subscribed to Richard Lehman's newsletter on that subject since 2003 with very gratifying results. Mr. Stooker's book is a welcome addition to a very narrow field. He writes clearly and extensively on a complex subject and I am researching some very solid possibilities as a result of "Income Investing Secrets". The language can be a little casual but is always relevant and does not detract. Most importantly, a beginner could easily develop a very gratifying income producing strategy from this experience. His specific recommendations towards the end are also very solid but you still need to do your own research. He would provide a great service to his readers through a financial blog following and updating his strategies and recommendations. As Rod Stewart said: "the wisdom of a lifetime no one can ever tell" but Mr. Stooker comes very close. Enjoy and profit!

Relief in a confusing investment world

Whew! Someone has finally explained what's most reliable and what's not in today's apparently-volatile investment world. Even better, this book explains it all using broad, easy-to-understand concepts and everyday language.

I used to invest regularly. Oh, it wasn't very much, so I didn't lose sleep over financial headlines during the past couple of years. Frankly, I'm not even an armchair stockbroker; I simply chose companies I liked to feel a connection to.

However, I did step on the brakes when several banks and investment firms folded. I was unwilling to risk money that might otherwise be spent on something more entertaining... and reliable.

This book restored my understanding -- and confidence -- in investments. Before I recognized the differences between trading and investing... well, I lumped the entire realm of stocks, bonds, etc., into one large, liability-fraught category.

Now, I have a far better understanding of what's safe, what's foolish, and the most solid approach to long-term investments.

The "ah-HA!" moments throughout this book will provide relief for anyone who -- in the past -- handed money to a broker or investment firm and crossed their fingers.

They say that knowledge is power. Well, this book definitely provides the knowledge that will empower any investor (small or large) to make better decisions in a changing marketplace.

If you're a current investor, or someone who'd like to invest but the economy makes you nervous, this is definitely the book to read.

This is a must read (and I don't say that lightly)

I like reading business and investment books, but this one blows them all out of the water!
It's not that other books aren't good. Some even very good. But this one is so in-depth, it weighs all the pros and cons of each investment vehicle, it quotes a lot of research and proves what works and what doesn't. And it does it all in a way that anyone can understand.

It's also geared toward something we should all think about - the long term.

I'm so impressed with this book, that I'm going to buy several for my immediate family so we can all share in these investment secrets.

I'm going to keep a sharp lookout for all of Richard Stooker's books from now on.

Children will relate to this young hero's triumph over normal childhood fears, and they'll love his clever solution to his problem. The book gleams with crisp full-color watercolor illustrations, and the alligator has just the right touch of scariness. The little boy is obviously a child of the 1980s, with his hot wheels tricycle and robot transformer type toys, but the story is timeless. Such a great book. I was obsessed with this book when I was kid. I remember the trail of candy going down the stairs leading the alligator to the garage. an excellent story about overcoming fear

In this Mercer Mayer classic, children are enthralled to find a little boy who insists that there is an alligator living under his bed. My kindergarten students love the child's antics as he tries to catch the alligator. When I teach facts about alligators, I use this book to help the children understand the difference between facts and fantasy. Also, by listing the foods that the child uses for alligator bait in the story, children can make a nice salad. This book gets imagination running and enthusiasm in high gear!

Hellyer argued that the federal deficit is nothing but a red herring that detracts from more fundamental issues such as the monetary system which, stripped of all the holy water that has been poured on it over the years, is nothing more than the perpetuation of a scam developed by the English goldsmiths more than three hundred years ago - a scam that has turned out to be the most profitable in history. This book removes the veil from the mystery of money. Nearly all money is simply virtual - computer entries by highly leveraged privately-owned banks that create money out of thin air. Worse, they are allowed to lend their capital up to twenty times or more and collect interest on it each time. Still worse many of the loans are made to hedge funds and the financial industry that make huge profits without creating any new real wealth that is tangible and useful. Hellyer's book explains exactly what has to be done. Bank ratios have to be reduced dramatically. At the same time the proportion of money created by governments (who own the patent on behalf of the people) has to be substantially increased. This will allow the fiscal flexibility necessary to balance their budgets and help finance critically important projects such as the transformation from an oil economy to one based on clean fuels. Many other major problems could be solved by a substantial infusion of debt free money.
